A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Be Still, My Soul (Finlandia) Jean Sibelius Susan Achuff, organ arr. Hal H. Hopson CALL TO WORSHIP One: Freedom is coming! All: We can hear it in the voices of the oppressed. One: Hope is coming! All: We can see it in the eyes of all those who despair. One: God is here! All: We count on God’s presence with us, to guide, heal and uplift our spirits. Amen. OPENING HYMN #594 How Beautiful, Our Spacious Skies MATERNA WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION God, we confess that We are surrounded by beauty, yet we often fail to wonder. We are blessed beyond measure, yet we often allow greed to shape our generosity. We are uncommonly free, yet we often bind others in an attempt to control them. We are given your grace yet we often fail to let our light shine. We are loved beyond measure, yet we often fail to pass on your love unconditionally. Make us people who celebrate the beauty of your creation, who give generously, who celebrate freedom, who shine light in the darkness, and who love without limits. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: …Our calling is life: live it well. All: By God’s grace may we always do so.
PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong James Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 8:27-29 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” SERMON What If… Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz “…Jesus had died of old age?” HYMN #51 O Sing a Song of Bethlehem KINGSFOLD PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week.
One: …We pray these things using the words you teach us, saying together, All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. TODAY’S CANTOR Thank you to Laura Rutherford for leading us in music this morning. ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s flowers are sponsored by Man Dy and dedicated to those struggling to obtain freedom and independence from life struggles. May the Lord our God bless you with a lighted path on your travels. The flowers are also dedicated to people celebrating a life of freedom and independence--whether it be physical, emotional, financial, or spiritual. May our God continue His great works upon you. HYMN COMMENTARY \"How Beautiful, Our Spacious Skies\" Katherine Lee Bates (1859-1929) wrote this hymn one evening after having traveled to the top of Pikes Peak with a group of teachers. Miriam Therese Winter (b.1938) adapted it and wrote the other stanzas in 1993. Katherine Bates, daughter of a Congregational minister, became a beloved professor and head of the English Department of Wellesley college. Samual Augustus Ward (1847-1903) composed this tune in 1882. Ward earned his living by selling musical instruments, supplies and sheet music. In addition, he was the founder and first conductor of the Orpheus Club Choir of Newark, NJ, a community choir that continues to this day. GUEST ARTIST Jacqueline Cordes is a 19-year-old student attending Pomona College. She and her family are members of CUCC. She recently released “Chroma,” her fifth album of original music on soundcloud.com. She has synesthesia, which enables her to see music in color, and she aims to create “vivid” compositions. In her spare time, she enjoys studying languages (including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tibetan), learning classical piano pieces, playing chess, and listening to Radiohead.
