A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE What a Friend We Have in Jesus Charles Ore INTROIT My Lord! What a Morning Spiritual CALL TO WORSHIP One: In our waking and in our sleeping, All: Let us praise God! One: In our worship and in our work, All: Let us praise God! One: From north to south and from east to west All: Let us praise God! One: In this hour and in every hour All: Let us praise God! OPENING HYMN We Come as Guests Invited WIE LIEBLICH IST DER MAIEN (see insert) WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of Steadfast Love, We confess that we often take the gift of community for granted. We do not realize the value of our neighbors until we are in crisis. We do not give thanks for our faith family until we covet their prayers. We do not understand the importance of relationships until ours are under strain. Help us to connect more fully with one another and nurture our personal connections daily. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: … In Christ, we are a new creation. All: Thanks be to God. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you.

CHILDREN’S WELCOME SONG This Little Light THIS JOY This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/ANTHEM Deep River Spiritual, arr. Jester Hairston DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ the word in flesh born low, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore, One God, Triune, whom we adore, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Luke 22:14-20 14 When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. 15 He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” SERMON Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland Havin’ Church: Old Time Religion for Today’s Church Communion HYMN Bread of the World in Mercy Broken RENDEZ À DIEU (see insert) COMMUNION

One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts! All: We lift them up to God. One: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give God our thanks and praise. One: …And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: All: Holy, holy, holy is our God. One: …In remembrance of your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer our lives and our love as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith: All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: We pray these things using the words you teach us… All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. HYMN COMMENTARY This Little Light of Mine This hymn is a proclamation that no adversity, including slavery, can keep the true believers from experiencing the joy that only God can give. Worshiping communities are encouraged to substitute different words for \"light:\" love, hope, faith, peace, etc. Jeffrey Radford arranged the tune in 1993. Radford (b. 1953) arranged this tune for congregational singing. Radford arranged eight different spirituals for The New Century Hymnal.
