A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (PICARDY) arr. Deasley INTROIT And Let Thy Holy Spirit Doc Blanchard WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: Like children playing outdoors, we are called inside to eat at the table. All: We are here as God’s children. One: Like children sharing sweet treats and toys, we are called to give what we can. All: We are here as God’s children. One: Like children asking questions, we are called to wonder about our God. All: We are here as God’s children. One: Let us play, give, and wonder together in this time of worship. OPENING HYMN #321 Break Now the Bread of Life BREAD OF LIFE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Loving God, Even though we try our best to love our neighbors, sometimes we don’t do the loving thing. At times, we have gotten angry, jealous, and careless, and we said words and took actions that we regret. We have ignored those who cry out for mercy, and we have turned away from those in need of love and peace. We have judged others when it was not right for us to do so. When you called us to gather around the table, we left some people out. We did not welcome them, and in doing this, we did not welcome you. We have fallen short of your kin-dom. For all these things and more, we ask your forgiveness, O God. We ask for your grace to fill our hearts, For your mercy to rest upon our souls. ASSURANCE OF PARDON One: …You are forgiven, today and always. All: Thanks be to God.

GUEST MUSIC Tenho Sede Wesley Amorim, guitar PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/ANTHEM Thee We Adore Schalk Chancel Choir DOXOLOGY LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ the word in flesh born low, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise Holy Spirit evermore, one God, Triune, whom we adore, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 10:13-16 Jayne Nall 13 People were bringing children to Jesus so that he would bless them. But the disciples scolded them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he grew angry and said to them, “Allow the children to come to me. Don’t forbid them, because God’s kingdom belongs to people like these children. 15 I assure you that whoever doesn’t welcome God’s kingdom like a child will never enter it.” 16 Then he hugged the children and blessed them. SERMON May Your Table Be a Playground Rev. Laurel Capesius HYMN #591 This is My Song FINLANDIA COMMUNION

All: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: Lift up your hearts! All: We lift them up to God. One: Let us give thanks to God. All: It is right to give God our thanks and praise. One: …We believe that you, O God, are still telling this story, and we are all a part of this beautiful mystery: All: Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …All this we pray in the name of Jesus, who taught us to pray these words together: All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. GUEST MUSIC Mandela Wesley Amorim, guitar BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE A Mighty Fortress is Our God EIN’ FESTE BURG A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, Our present help amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe With craft and power great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth without an equal. And though this world with devils filled should threaten to undo us, We will not fear for God has willed the truth to triumph through us. The powers of evil grim, we Trimble not for them; Their rage we can endure, for lo, their doom is sure: One little word shall fell them.

POSTLUDE Praeludium in G Minor, BWV 535 Bach ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s altar flowers are given by Diana Miller and Catherine Curtis, in honor of Craig Alan Miller and Pam Miller. GUEST ARTIST Wesley Amorim, a guitarist, composer, and arranger from São Paulo, Brazil, started his musical journey at the age of 11 years old. He is a graduate in music from the São Caetano do Sul Arts Foundation (FASCS). At 17, he began playing and recording professionally using a wide range of music genres, from Brazilian to jazz, rock, pop, and gospel. He has performed in Broadway musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar and The Lion King, and with countless artists. HYMN COMMENTARY This Is My Song Lloyd Stone wrote this text during the brief period of international peace that was shattered by the start of World War II. Stone moved to Hawaii and taught in public schools and at the University of Hawaii. Jean Sibelius, Finland's greatest composer, based much of his music on national myths and folktales. He stopped composing in 1929, refusing to follow the trends of modern musical composition.
