DEDICATION TESTIMONIES Amiah Adamiak Linda Corbin & Nancy Matheny Ray Zamudio MUSIC Blackbird The Beatles Charles Olson, voice & piano SCRIPTURE Mark 9:2-13 Robert Lewis 2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean. 11 Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12 He said to them, “Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written about him.” SERMON Seeing Our True Selves Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland & Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz

ANTHEM Rise Up My Love Willan PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: … We pray using the words Jesus teaches us, saying… All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. GUEST MUSIC Human Amiah Adamiak BENEDICTION CLOSING RESPONSE A Mighty Fortress is Our God EIN’ FESTE BURG A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, Our present help amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe With craft and power great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth without an equal. And though this world with devils filled should threaten to undo us, We will not fear for God has willed the truth to triumph through us. The powers of evil grim, we tremble not for them; Their rage we can endure, for lo, their doom is sure: One little word shall fell them. A NOTE FROM JON CAMPBELL I've accepted a position as Director of Music at a church in Minnesota, which will bring me much closer to my two children. This has been a very difficult decision. I've come to love Claremont UCC and have developed many close and lasting relationships. I wish the church and community joy and success. Special thanks to the pastors and Dr. Carey Robertson for over three years of successful ministry-- in the midst of a global pandemic! - Dr. Jonathan D. Campbell ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s altar flowers are given by Man Dy in celebration of the beautiful diversity found within our church family. We are so glad that you are here this morning and hope that you will always consider this church a safe space for you and your loved ones! HYMN COMMENTARY In the Midst of New Dimensions Julian Bush (b. 1936) sought to incorporate Native American spiritual imagery with Hebrew imagery in this text. He had learned about native spirituality from a friend in Colorado. Rush was educated at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Denver. Rush composed this tune for his own words. It was played at a 1985 church conference, including Asian, African American, Latin American, and European American services. Rush was named the founding director of the Colorado Aids Project and served there for over a decade. He served as youth minister at Fort Worth and at Colorado Springs.
