A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Hamburg, arr. Dale Wood INTROIT Sacred Silence Karissa Dennis Choral Bells CALL TO WORSHIP One: We long to see God: All: at home and at work, at school and at play. One: We long to see God: All: in our homes and with our families. One: We long to see God: All: in our times of rejoicing and suffering. One: We long to see God: All: This morning, in our worship. OPENING HYMN #51 O Sing a Song of Bethlehem KINGSFOLD WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful Creator, As we enter this season of Lent, we confess that some burdens are too heavy to carry, and some stories are too painful to speak. When we dwell on our pain, it is easy for us to believe lies: that we are alone, that the future is hopeless, that evil will triumph. When we feel empty with sadness, fill us with your love. Shine resurrection into the cracks of our hearts and remind us: that you are always with us, that joy comes in the morning, and that new life is right around the corner. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: … Let us receive healing and love from the One who will never let us go. All: Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong James Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. SERMON ON THE STEPS BAPTISM OF ABIGAIL LOUISE FELIX & ELEANOR LOUISE FELIX One: Little children were being brought to Jesus so that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them; but Jesus said, All: “Let the little children come to me, do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” OFFERING/ANTHEM De profundis clamavi Juan Romero MUSICAL RESPONSE In Our God, We’ll Be Ever Thankful Taizé DEDICATION SCRIPTURE John 1:43-51 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward

him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49 Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” SERMON Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz (un)faithful: When Even Disciples Miss the Mark “Can Anything Good Come from Nazareth?” HYMN #31 All Things Bright and Beautiful ROYAL OAK PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …Help us, loving Creator, to ever respond to you and your invitation to your grace. All: Still-speaking God, hear our prayer... One: …We pray that your church may rise up with renewed commitment in answer to your call, that your people may be instruments of your grace and love. All: Still-speaking God, hear our prayer... One: … Grant them courage and steadfast faith... All: Still-speaking God, hear our prayer... One: …who taught us to pray as one family, saying, All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. HYMN COMMENTARY \"O Sing a Song of Bethlehem\" Louis Fitzgerald Benson (1855-1930) wrote this text to summarize the life of Jesus. He trained to be a lawyer, but later attended Princeton Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1886. He became one of the foremost hymnolists in the U.S. John Waughan Williams harmonized this traditional English melody. This tune was first written down by Alfred J. Hopkins and published in 1893 in a setting for harp and strings for the New York World Fair. CLAREMONT UCC PRAYER LIST Join us in prayer this week for the following individuals.
