A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE O God, Our Help in Ages Past Various INTROIT The Gates of Jerusalem McAfee WELCOME VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL SONG CALL TO WORSHIP One: In our playing and resting, All: We are all connected. One: In our grief and sorrow, All: We are all connected. One: In our dreaming and hoping, All: We are all connected. Let us join together in worship as a connected body of faith. OPENING HYMN #25 O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE (Verses 1, 2, 4, 5, 1) PRAYER OF CONFESSION Triune God, who comes to us as three in one, we confess that in the last year and a half our sense of community has been both fortified and distorted. We recognized the importance of being connected, but also spent unprecedented time alone. We realized how much we depend on one another, but also were asked to make many choices for ourselves. We were tasked with learning how to connect online, and now we are tasked with re- learning how to connect face to face. We pray that Your Holy Spirit will not leave us to figure this all out for ourselves, but instead guide us gently into loving, supportive community in this new day and age. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS

Kodama Choral Bells DEDICATION SCRIPTURE 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. SERMON Created to Create: Rev. Dr. Jacob Buchholz “In Order to Create We Must CONNECT” ANTHEM Another Year of Grace Lovelace PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week.
One: …We pray for all of these things using the words Jesus teaches us, saying… All: Great Giver, in whom heaven is found, holy is Your name. May your commonwealth of peace and freedom flourish on earth. Give us this day bread for our journey, and make us hungry to see the whole world nourished. Forgive us and help us forgive one another. Strengthen us for the challenges that lie ahead. Let us hear your prophets, and deliver us from our privilege. For your love is the only power, the only home, the only honor we need, in this world and in the world to come. Amen. HYMN COMMENTARY \"O God Our Help in Ages Past” Issac Watts (1674-1748) based this hymn on Psalm 90. This is undoubtedly Watts' greatest hymn. He is considered the father of modern English hymnody. He wrote more than 600 hymns, enabling Protestantism in England and New England to free itself from line-singing the Psalms.
William Craft (1678-1727) is thought to have written this tune while he was organist at St. Anne's Church in London. He later served as organist at Westminster Abbey, and was buried there.
