A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Keep on Moving Forward Pat Humphries Hangan With Millard INTROIT Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days ST. FLAVIAN CALL TO WORSHIP One: We come to prepare for the holiest of weeks. All: Today we will begin with praise, with joyful Hosannas on our lips; One: Thursday we will travel through betrayal. All: Friday we will descend into the depths of evil and death, cradling hope deep in our hearts. One: Saturday we will watch and wait to see if Christ’s promise of resurrection might be true. All: Jesus leads us through this week, and we will follow, for he is our wise Savior, the Living Word who sustains us. One: We wave palm branches in anticipation, we lay our love before him, to cushion his walk. All: Hosanna! Hosanna! Blessed is the One who ushers forth us the kingdom of God! OPENING HYMN #216 All Glory, Laud, and Honor ST. THEODULPH WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION We confess that we are not so different from those who welcomed you, O Jesus, into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, yet later shouted “Crucify him!” or remained silent in the face of injustice. We have betrayed you too, Lord Jesus by our sins both secret and known. Yet you went all the way to the cross for us, with the promise to rise again on the third day so that we might be redeemed. Help us to see your glory, draw us closer to you that we may become more faithful, and more joyful disciples. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: … in the name of Jesus Christ, you are being forgiven, even now. All: Glory be to God. Amen!

CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COVENANT In response to God’s creating, redeeming, and sustaining love, we unite for the worship of God and the service of all. We seek to know the will of God and to walk in God’s ways made known in Jesus Christ; to love one another; to proclaim the Gospel to all the world; to work and pray for peace and justice; and to live in harmony with all creation. We trust the presence of the Holy Spirit in trial and rejoicing and the promise of eternal life both now and for evermore. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. LITURGICAL SONG Where Children Belong James Ritchie This, this is where children belong, welcomed as part of the worshipping throng. Water, God’s Word, bread and cup, prayer and song: This is where children belong. SERMON ON THE STEPS Rev. Laurel Capesius OFFERING/ANTHEM Ride On, Ride On in Majesty Graham George arr. Richard W. Gieseke MUSICAL RESPONSE In Our God, We’ll Be Ever Thankful Taizé DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 8:31-37 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and

after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?” SERMON Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland (un)faithful: When Even Disciples Miss the Mark “That Time When Jesus Called Peter Satan” HYMN #223 What Wondrous Love Is This WONDROUS LOVE BAPTISM OF YASAMAN MORADY PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray these things using the words you teach us, saying together, All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ALTAR FLOWERS Today’s flowers are sponsored by Man Dy as a reminder of the beauty of God's love, even during the darkest of times. As we journey through Holy Week, may we remember that God's love is always there, even when we feel at our lowest. GUEST ARTIST Elizabeth Hangan and Marguerite Millard began informally singing with each other at The Folk Music Center where they both work. They decided to combine the enjoyment of singing together with their love of American Roots music to form the duo Hangan With Millard. They have performed in Claremont and the LA area. Elizabeth sings and plays in a variety of bands including The Elizabeth Hangan Band, LA Love Band, 909 Soul Project, Blues and Fries. Marguerite

sings with her brother David in the local band Squeakin’ Wheels. The duo always enjoys singing at UCC. HYMN COMMENTARY \"All Glory, Laud, and Honor” Theodulph of Orleans (750-821) wrote this hymn while imprisoned by King Louis I, son of Charlemagne. In medieval and modern England and France, clergy and choirs paraded through their towns, singing this hymn. Melchior Teshner (1584-1635) composed this tune. His son and then grandson followed him as pastors in the same church in Germany. CLAREMONT UCC PRAYER LIST Join us in prayer this week for the following individuals.
