A CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST PRELUDE Solemn Melody Dixon INTROIT “I Believe” from Credo of Gospel Mass Robert Ray WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP All: The Holy Spirit invites us to worship To rest from the things that are troubling us To hear what Christ teaches us about life To understand how we can help one another With open hearts, let us worship our God. OPENING HYMN Great Is Your Faithfulness FAITHFULNESS Great is your faithfulness, O God, creator, with you no shadows of turning we see. You do not change, your compassions they fail not; all of your goodness forever will be. Great is your faithfulness! Great is your faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed your hand has provided, great is your faithfulness, God, unto me! Pardon for sin and a peace so enduring, your own dear presence to cheer and to guide. Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessing all mine with ten thousand beside. Great is your faithfulness! Great is your faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed your hand has provided, great is your faithfulness, God, unto me! PRAYER OF CONFESSION Giver of life, you have given us time in this world to make changes, to bring justice to your people, to speak up for those who have been silenced, to stand with the oppressed and marginalized. Too often, we do not seize these opportunities to do your work, but instead hope that someone else will do it
for us. Spur us into action, O God. Give us the energy and creativity to meet the world’s needs with our gifts. Inspire us to make good use of our lives and be instruments of your grace, peace, and righteousness. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: …God’s Grace embraces us as we are and where we are and draws us out to be the people we were created to be. All: Let us accept God’s grace. Amen. CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COVENANT In response to God's creating, redeeming, and sustaining love, we unite for the worship of God and the service of all. We seek to know the will of God and to walk in God's ways, made known in Jesus Christ: to love one another, to proclaim the Gospel to all the world, to work and pray for peace and justice, and to live in harmony with all creation. We trust the presence of the Holy Spirit in trial and rejoicing and the promise of eternal life both now and for evermore. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. SERMON ON THE STEPS OFFERING/MUSIC It Is Well Stephan Nosrat DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Jude 1:3-4, 17-21 3 Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. 4 For certain intruders have stolen in among you, people who long ago were designated for this condemnation as ungodly, who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. 17 But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 for they said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts.” 19 It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. 20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; 21 keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.
