OPENING HYMN #448 Take My Life, God, Let It Be VIENNA Accompanied by the Scout Band WELCOME PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of Love, we confess that we often prioritize our own agendas, nourish our own privilege, and hurt others in the effort to impose our will. We pray that You will forgive us and pull us off the throne of our pride, releasing us to find our worth in Your love. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: … Let us live as renewed people. All: Amen. CLAREMONT UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST COVENANT In response to God’s creating, redeeming, and sustaining love, we unite for the worship of God and the service of all. We seek to know the will of God and to walk in God’s ways made known in Jesus Christ; to love one another; to proclaim the Gospel to all the world; to work and pray for peace and justice; and to live in harmony with all creation. We trust the presence of the Holy Spirit in trial and rejoicing and the promise of eternal life both now and for evermore. Amen.

SERMON ON THE STEPS Scouts of Troop 407 and Pack 401 OFFERING/ANTHEM Think on These Things Craig Courtney MUSICAL RESPONSE In Our God, We’ll Be Ever Thankful Taizé DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Mark 10:25-35 25 “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 They were greatly astounded and said to one another, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “Look, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
32 They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; 34 they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again.” 35 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” SERMON Rev. Dr. Jen Strickland (un)faithful: When Even Disciples Miss the Mark “I call shotgun!” HYMN I, the Lord of Sea and Sky HERE I AM I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Refrain: Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people's pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone. I will speak my word to them, Whom shall I send? (Refrain) I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied. I will give my life to them. Whom shall I send? (Refrain) PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER To honor the power of both the traditional and new versions of the Lord’s Prayer, we will alternate which version we pray each week. One: …We pray these things using the words you teach us, saying together,
All: Our Father/Mother/Creator who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom/kin-dom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom/kin-dom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. GUEST ARTIST Trio Sol de Amores is a musical group comprised of three sisters: Belinda, 18, string bass; Lilly, 17, guitar; and Dolce, 15, violin. Born and raised in the Inland Empire, this musical trio plays homage to many Latin artists by playing their classic hits from various genres of music including Mariachi, Rancheras, Boleros, English and many more. What began as musical lessons to learn new instruments quickly became their favorite hobby and passion. These talented ladies not only perform as a trio, but also participate in their schools’ ensembles including Jazz Band, Orchestra, Concert Band, String Ensemble, and Indoor Drumline. HYMN COMMENTARY \"Take My Life, God, Let It Be\" Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) wrote this poem, which has been translated into many languages, including French, German, Swedish, Russian, and some African and Asian languages. Justin Heinrich Knecht (1752-1817) was an accomplished organist who wrote many compositions for the church and theater. Justin introduced the use of program notes in his concert programs, to provide the audience with background information on the music being performed.
