Bulbs planted after October may not have time to root adequately and may not flower uniformly in the spring. Bulbs are planted deeper than seed, usually three to four times the diameter of the bulb. This measurement is between the soil surface and the tip of the bulb. Make sure to plant the bulbs with the growing tip up. After the ground freezes, cover the bed with a three-inch layer of mulch to prevent alternate freezing and thawing that could break roots and damage bulbs. Fertilizer is important to bulbs. It is a good idea to add a general-purpose inorganic fertilizer, such as 5-10-5 to provide additional nutritional bulb needs. The fertilizer needs to be in the root zone to be effective. After the plants bloom in the spring, let the foliage die down naturally. The foliage provides energy to the bulb for the next season's bloom. Happy planting!!
