A Case Study PROBLEM AT WORK Engr. Ponce acknowledged that throughout his career, he came across several challenging circumstances. He frequently encountered technical difficulties while working at Kimberly Clark Philippines, including problems with the machinery, manpower, and paper quality. On the other side, he claimed that while serving in the City Government of Biñan City Engineering Office, he experienced several dishonest contractors while managing construction projects. He clarified that these contractors frequently use substandard materials when building. He stated that a portion of the flood control in one of his projects, the flood control project in Biñan City, collapsed before it was finished. Additionally, he added that envious coworkers are prevalent, especially when it comes to money, during his time working at the city engineering office. He stressed that corruption is widespread in the administration and that he has occasionally been offered bribes by colleagues to use subpar materials and allocate funds incorrectly. He made it clear, nevertheless, that he is firmly opposed to it. 12
DECISION MAKING In terms of making a decision involving a project, Engr. Jorge C. Ponce considered the following: FEASIBILITY He always assesses whether the project is feasible or not BENEFICIARIES As a city engineer, it is part of their responsibility to create infrastructures that will benefit the common good and improve the livelihood and economic sector of Biñan City 13
FACTORS Engr. Ponce caught the following factors as one of the roots of problem at work. CO RRU PTION Corruption is one of the greatest challenge in having a good governance in the Philippines. According to a Social Weather Station's survey in October 2000, 85% of Filipinos believed that it is rampant in the government. Unfortunately, Engr. Ponce witnessed/encountered this on his work under the local government unit of the Philippines. DE FAM ATION Defamation is anything that damages the good reputation of someone. Engr. COURSE OF ACTION TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM He added that he constantly reports the chief engineer when he comes across dishonest and toxic coworkers. Additionally, he emphasized that he avoids talking with them personally because he thinks it is difficult to persuade someone who is stubborn to change their mind; doing so will simply make you angry and worn out by their negativity. If it ever gets to the point where the report has been filed and he and the person who complained have been requested to testify, he will just defend himself and let the authority decide. HOW DID IT Engr. Jorge C. Ponce TURN OUT? shared that some of his reported co- workers gets fired and removed from the project or office. 15
TIPS TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT 5 PEOPLE AT WORK By Group 2 In the grand scheme of things, whatever feelings we have toward other people do not matter. Work is work and it should not come to a point where it already affects your life. Especially in a business or organization, productivity is more important than making sure everyone in the workplace is getting along with each other. Problems like this arise not only in the workplace but also in our homes or school, and sometimes we could not help but react and let our feelings get affected. As individuals, it is natural for our reactions and ways of handling such problems to be different—our actions usually depend on our own principles and perspectives in life. Since we are four (4) different people in the group, this would be most likely the case. But as we conversed with one another and judged how Engr. Jorge resolved the issue, we could all agree that it is what is best to do. He did the right thing as the action matched the problem. Moreover, the group came up with recommendations in order to improve the course of action or a procedure to deal with a situation like this. We based our recommendations on various sources and their similarities are connected to articles that discuss handling difficult people at work. Ask Yourself Let the difficult person know how you feel Asking yourself is the best first thing to do in this After that, you can let the difficult person know difficult situation. Make sure that the problem how you feel whenever you are comfortable with roots from the difficult person’s activities and you doing it. are not overreacting. Assess other possible factors why you think you are affected in work and not just focus on the person itself. If you tend to blame someone right away, it might mean to others that you have personal issues with him or her. 16
Letting the difficult person know how you feel Talk with your does not necessarily mean insinuating and manager or boss spreading hearsay until the information indirectly reaches the person. It takes a lot of courage to go straight up to your coworker but it is best if you inform them that you do not like how they are treating you. You should always bear in mind that our expectations always have a turn of events, so preparing yourself with different scenarios is important in order not to flake out and you can still fulfill your goal. Find Support If you are confident about what you feel but not in Finally, you can talk about it with your confronting the person, you can always have a manager/boss. If you think you already gave your support system. Ask your other coworkers if you shot and nothing else happens after you dealt share the same sentiments or if that person with the problem alone, you can take your step to bothers them the same way as you. the next level. Indirectly informing the person is better if you do it by talking with the higher authority. Although it may seem radical, sometimes all it takes to change someone's behavior is a word from someone higher up the management. Be aware that you must prepare for an unpleasant talk with your manager or boss. Be cautious while approaching your supervisor and plan ahead for what will work. Observe Changes Assess your coworker if there had been any changes. Observe if there are any signs of improvement or if it only caused that person to be worse in the workplace. In this way, we can justify whether our plan of action has been effective or whether a follow-up solution is required. 17
Engr. Jorge improved further the solution to the problem advice From The when he shared to us his advice in the workplace. He said, how grievous must a problem be, you should not take it personally. It is not your fault that somebody acts the way they do. Instead, stay true to who you are. Do not let their actions get the better of you; instead, communicate in a cool, collected, and succinct manner. You will serve as an example and provide your coworker the chance to master excellent communication skills. Developing rapport has also become one of his ways to prevent such instances. Building a connection with a tough employee may seem paradoxical, yet this strategy has been successful in the past. You will have a greater idea of someone's personality when you take the time to get to know them, including their work style, hobbies, likes, and dislikes. Your coworker may change their conduct or at the very least give you the respect you deserve when you try to show compassion for them. Lastly, you should learn how to stand up for yourself. Engr. Jorge emphasized the idea that no one should ever tolerate poor and inexcusable behavior. We are all entitled to respect. By expressing your feelings to that individual, you are also sharing the desire for him or her to be respectful in the end. 1 Don't Take It Personally 2 Develop Rapport 3 Stand Up For Yourself 18
e ngineer With the outstanding principles and values embodied CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS by Engr. Jorge C. Ponce, in situations such as being true to himself and finding better work opportunities in life, it is commendable to recognize him as a professional engineer with a great passion for engineering and management. As mentioned earlier, as city engineers, it is part of their responsibility to ensure that all proposed projects are feasible and beneficial for the citizen of Biñan. 19
