HISTORY F iddler on the Roof began life in the mind of the Russian years until Grease surpassed its run. Remarkably, both Jerry Bock Yiddish author and playwright Salomon Naumovich aged 81, and Joseph Stein aged 98, passed away within ten days of Rabinovich, better known to millions as Sholem Aleichem each other in October/November 2010. It spawned four Broadway revivals, a classy 1971 film With music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by adaptation and has been the springboard for an interesting, eclectic Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964, and and sometimes puzzling range of famous stars, including Zero was the first musical ever to surpass the 3,000 performance mark Mostel, Herschel Bernardi, Leonard Nimoy (yes, Dr Spock!), (this equates to over seven years of shows). Fiddler held the record Harvey Fierstein (the original Edna Turnblad in Hairspray), for the longest running Broadway musical of all time for almost ten Theodore Bikel, Alfred Molina, Beatrice Arthur (from The Golden 04

Girls), opera star Julia Migenes, Bette Midler (who played Tzeitel in the original 1960s production), Rosie O’Donnell (playing Golde in the 2005 revival), Adrienne Barbeau, Pia Zadora - and of course, the person who is forever identified with the role of Tevye and who has played the role more than anyone else (including in the movie) - Chaim Topol, who played the role on and off from 1967 until 2009, a total of over 2,500 performances. The musical’s title stems from the painting “The Fiddler” by Marc Chagall, one of many surreal paintings he created of Eastern European Jewish life, often including a fiddler. The Fiddler is a metaphor for survival, through tradition and joyfulness, in a life of uncertainty and imbalance. Perching on a roof reminds us of the precariousness of his position and the need to maintain balance whilst focusing on one’s surroundings at all times. 05
