PRESIDENT’S NOTE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Welcome to CLOC’s second production in its celebratory Whilst sitting in Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in early 2013, 50th year – Production #101. I watched the Australian production of Legally Blonde When planning the two productions we would mount in our and was unable to contain my enjoyment of such a fun, 50th year, the CLOC committee wanted to acknowledge the light-hearted and joyful show. Thoroughly entertained, I knew past 50 years of shows that we have produced, while also look this was a musical I wanted to direct and choreograph. Weeks forward to the future and new generation of musical theatre and later, I returned to see the production again to gauge if the CLOC shows to come. musical would translate well to the non-professional stage, For our 100th production earlier this year, CLOC looked to and once I realised that it would, I floated the idea with the our past catalogue of shows and revived one of our biggest CLOC committee. I was then offered the role of hits from 1996 and from the Golden Age of American Musical Director/Choreographer, which has been exciting Theatre, the classic Broadway musical 42nd Street. This proved and very rewarding. to be hugely successful with adoring audiences, and became a very special and memorable production on many levels for Having been fortunate to engage such an experienced and everyone involved with the show, many of whom had a special dedicated cast, I was able to work through scenes and songs connection and story to tell regarding CLOC, the show or both. with input from them, allowing a collaborative effort from For our 101st production, we wanted to salute the modern all involved. A special thank you to Musical Director Andy musical comedy and do something new, exciting and McCalman, for his outstanding work in understanding and refreshing. We found what we were looking for with the return imparting the intent behind every musical moment – and there to Melbourne of the effervescent, effusive and very pink Legally are lots of them, from quiet and poignant reflections, to witty Blonde: The Musical. This show not only introduces new and clever interchanges, to the full-scale ‘wow’ production audiences to CLOC, many of whom will know the show from numbers featuring the entire cast. the hit movie, but we have also included some new names to our production team as the way of the future. Although After being on the production team for six CLOC shows, James Rooney is well known to CLOC audiences, this is his this is my first as Director and I need to thank CLOC and its first show with us as director/choreographer, a huge challenge dedicated team for the support given in mounting such a that he has (ahem) skipped along to with excitement and mammoth show. With the hundreds of committed volunteers infectious enthusiasm. Other new faces making their debut supporting a wonderfully talented and energetic cast, I hope to the production team are Merinda Backway (Set Designer) you sit back and enjoy Legally Blonde.̋ and Emily Smithies (Costume Designer). And to keep things on track we have some familiar names and faces along for JAMES ROONEY the journey as well – Musical Director Andy McCalman (who Director/Choreographer last worked with us on The Phantom of the Opera and returns for his third CLOC production as Musical Director), Lighting Designer Brad Alcock and Sound Designer Marcello Lo Ricco. And just to add to the fun, we not only welcome 25 human cast members (9 of whom are returning after being part of 42nd Street), but also two canine divas as well – Taco and Betty, who threaten to upstage their co-stars at every appearance! We hope this mixture of old and new has suitably honoured CLOC’s past, present and future, and cemented its place in our audiences’ hearts and minds as producers of first-rate high quality musical theatre entertainment, produced with passion, commitment and delight by everyone connected with CLOC. So let’s see out our 50th year with the impossibly chirpy, bubbly and optimistic Elle Woods, her Delta Nu pals, her special four legged pooch Bruiser, and get ready to be pinkified! DIRECTION & DESIGN James Rooney Director/Choreographer James’ talents straddle both sides of the footlights. As a (very young) performer, James joined CLOC in 1991 for Kiss Me Kate followed by Can-Can, Funny Girl, 42nd Street, A Chorus Line, Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance!, My One and Only, Chicago, Cats, and perhaps most memorably, the role of Wing in 2008’s Hot Shoe Shuffle, for which he deservedly won the Music Theatre Guild Dancer’s Award. As dance director/choreographer, James has worked for CLOC in productions of Crazy for You, Company, Anything Goes, West Side Story, Gigi and Sunset Boulevard. As director/ choreographer/performer, some of his productions for other companies have included Hello Dolly, On the Town, Me and My Girl, My One and Only, The Producers and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Together with Tamara Finch, James co-founded Quirky Productions, which successfully produced the Midsumma smash hit, Zanna, Don’t! (2009) and then La Cage Aux Folles (2012). For our 100th production 42nd Street, James combined both on and offstage roles as Assistant Director/Choreographer, as well as reprising the role of dance director Andy Lee that he had first played in our 1996 version. James is very excited to take the helm of his first CLOC directorial production. Andy McCalman Musical Director Originally from Ballarat, where he is a Life Member of Ballarat Lyric Theatre, Andy’s musical theatre debut was in their production of Grease in the role of Doody. Among his many performance highlights since then have included four – yes four – productions of Les Miserables (two as Enjolras, two as Jean Valjean – notching up two Music Theatre Guild nominations before winning the Best Actor Award for his portrayal of Jean Valjean in Ballarat’s 2009 production). Andy also managed to squeeze in a CLOC performance, as Rapunzel’s prince in our 1994 production of Into the Woods. As Musical Director, Andy has also enjoyed success, winning the Guild award for Musical Direction for Ballarat’s 2007 production of Cats, and being nominated for Chicago (2004) and Grease (2005). In 2012, Andy had the double honour of being nominated TWICE for both shows he musically directed (Sunset Boulevard - CLOC, and Hairspray - Lyric, Ballarat), winning for Sunset Boulevard. Andy’s most recent musical foray was a double Phantom of the Opera header – he first musically directed CLOC’s world premiere production (Guild nomination), and then leapt out of the orchestra pit and over the footlights to perform the title role for his old home town with Ballarat’s Lyric Theatre earlier this year. He has now jumped back into the pit and picked up the baton once more to resume his musical direction mantle with a show as different as can be from his last musical adventures. 4

BACKGROUND Legally Blonde began life as a novel published by Amanda Brown, which was partly based on her experiences at Stanford Law School. The book was immediately optioned by Hollywood and became the 2001 megahit movie starring Reese Witherspoon and directed by Australian Robert Luketic. The success of the movie led to the inevitable sequels (Legally Blonde 2: Red White and Blonde in 2003, followed by Legally Blondes in 2009). But it was the musical version of the movie that gave the story a new lease of life, when it premiered on Broadway on April 29, 2007. Featuring a star turn by its leading lady Laura Bell Bundy, and scene stealing moments by two very live and cute dogs, the show received seven Tony nominations and ten Drama Desk nominations. The show played 30 previews and 595 regular performances on Broadway, before touring productions in the United States, a three year West End run and an Australian production which ran during 2012-13 starring Lucy Durack, David Harris, Cameron Daddo and Rob Mills. Sisterhood SYNOPSIS A group of Delta Nu sorority girls at UCLA is celebrating the news that campus dreamboat Warner Huntington III is set to propose to their blonde and very pink friend Elle Woods. That night, at a romantic dinner, instead of proposing, Warner tells Elle that she is not ‘serious’ enough for him and he is looking for a more substantial girlfriend who will help him succeed as he moves to Harvard Law School. Elle is heartbroken, but after some time in mourning, comes up with a plan to enrol in Harvard Law School herself to prove Warner wrong and win him back. With the assistance of her friends and parents, Elle prepares a unique application and is surprisingly accepted by the admissions panel. Once at Harvard, Elle is met with sniggers and derision by her classmates, who disapprove of her pink clothes, her perky attitude and her adorable dog Bruiser the chihuahua. The law class is run by Professor Callahan and his assistant Emmett Forrest, the only person who shows Elle any kindness. Elle is devastated to discover that Warner now has a new girlfriend, Vivienne Kensington, more substantial and serious than Elle. With the assistance of Emmett, her new hairdresser Paulette and her Delta Nu sorority pals, Elle realises that she needs to be free of her obsession with Warner and win his respect. So she concentrates on her studies, and is delighted to receive one of Professor Callahan’s coveted internship positions. As part of his legal team, she becomes involved in the defence of high profile fitness guru Brooke Wyndham, who has been accused of murdering her wealthy and much older husband. Elle creates a special bond with Brooke, and through clever deduction, intuition and smarts, finds a way during the trial to exonerate Brooke and identify the real murderer. As Elle celebrates her success, Warner finally proposes, having been dumped by Vivienne. Elle refuses, claiming to have been changed by her new experiences. Three years later, Elle graduates as valedictorian of her law class, with a new perspective on life, love and blondes – and of course, with Bruiser in tow. 15
