To this day, I continue to have strong memories of the first performance I saw of Blood Brothers. Sitting in the cold Comedy Theatre at the age of 16, not knowing what I was about to see, the visions and sounds of this wonderful production filled me with awe. I remember vividly the haunting overture, the passion of Mrs Johnstone and the overwhelming emotion that swept through the audience during the musical’s final moments. The wit, humour and tragedy of Willy Russell’s script and music (author of Stags and Hens, Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine) are as warm and powerful as they were when the show first premiered on the West End in 1983. As a director, I have always been attracted to a musical with a strong story and equally strong characters; where the music and dialogue seem to blend into each other, neither fighting for prominence over the other; where the focus is on the storytelling and the journey taken by both the characters and the audience alike. Blood Brothers is no exception. I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to work on one of my favourite musicals and am even more thankful for the amazing support and experience of CLOC, the crew and the outstanding cast you are seeing tonight. All have worked tirelessly (with a few bruised knees along the way) to bring the simple story of the Johnstone twins to life. From the mad-house “children’s workshop”, the “kids’ games”, the wonderful creations of the costumes (Kelly Farrow), the stunning lighting (Stelios Karagiannis), the evocative sound design (Alan Green), to the bump-in of the beautiful large and detailed set you see tonight (Graham McGuffie, Grant Alley), each department has brought along their considerable skills and experience, making this production a pleasure to work on from day one. Special thanks must go to Martin Macaulay for his wonderful work (and quirky sense of humour) and to Tamara Finch for her unwavering eye, skill and support. I hope you enjoy the Blood Brothers experience and the journey of the Johnstone twins as much as I have enjoyed playing a hand in steering its course. For all brothers everywhere – for Daz. So did y’ever hear the story of the Johnstone twins? Come on the deeply emotional journey that is ‘Blood Brothers’, a haunting and poignant musical tragedy and at the same time an incisive social commentary. Mrs. Johnstone, deserted by her husband and with a houseful of children to feed, learns she is pregnant with twins, whom she cannot afford to keep. To make ends meet, she cleans for the wealthy Mrs Lyons who is childless and yearns for a family. Learning of Mrs Johnstone’s plight, Mrs Lyons persuades her to hand over one of the twins for Mrs Lyons to bring up as her own. In desperation, Mrs. Johnstone agrees, a plan is hatched and an oath taken between the two women that neither child will ever know of the other’s existence ‘or they will both die’. The two boys grow up living only streets from each other but being part of two starkly different worlds. Mickey Johnstone grows up on the streets, hanging around with his siblings and other neighbourhood children, which leads to increasing trouble with his job, the law and his emotional and mental state. Edward Lyons has a privileged upbringing, goes on to University and becomes a local Councillor. Despite their differences and the best efforts of Mrs Lyons to keep the boys apart, they meet and become best friends – ‘blood brothers’. They also fall in love with the same girl, Linda, who marries Mickey but retains feelings for Eddie. We follow the two brothers as they grow from young boys to adult men with their lives intertwining through the years, until the shattering climax, in which the prophecy and warning made by Mrs Lyons so long ago is fulfilled with tragic consequences. 9
