CLOC FROM THE PRESIDENT COMMITTEE Welcome to CLOC Musical Theatre’s 40th Anniversary production of Mack & Mabel. This year is a major PRESIDENT Grant Alley milestone for CLOC - one of Victoria’s most innovative and successful music theatre production companies. Four decades of enthusiasm, dedication and sheer hard work, and eighty major productions, have made the ADMINISTRATOR Sandra Davies name CLOC synonymous with excellence in music theatre. SECRETARY Janet Cameron Since CLOC commenced in 1964, 1,300 people have performed in our productions, nearly 1,500 volunteers have worked behind the scenes and nearly 400,000 people have enjoyed our performances. CLOC's achievements have been built on a strong tradition of providing the highest quality productions at the lowest possible price. CLOC has a strong commitment to continue to meet your expectations by staging the standard of entertainment you have come to anticipate. As we celebrate this significant occasion, we recognise and thank you, our patrons, for your contribution to our success. Without your continuing support, CLOC would not be here to transport you yet again into the magical world of theatre. We pay tribute to you in the way we know best - sit back, relax and enjoy yourselves as we entertain you with our all singing, and all dancing spectacular production of Mack & Mabel. Grant Alley CLOC President TREASURER Liz Smallridge DIRECTOR’S NOTES COMMITEE John Davies The original production of Mack & Mabel premiered at New York’s Majestic Theatre on October 6, 1974. The story traces the changing fortunes of Mack Sennett the legendary Hollywood actor / director / producer and COMMITEE Carol Humphrey his beautiful talented, silent screen star, Mabel Normand at the turn of the 20th century. COMMITEE Allan Paul Mack Sennett’s genius for comedy made him the foremost director of ‘two-reelers’ from 1910 to the coming of sound in the late 1920s. He created such stars as Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbuckle, Gloria Swanson, Marie Andrew Roberts Dressler and Ben Turpin and elevated slapstick comedy to an art form with his wonderful Keystone Kops and pie throwing scenarios. The musical is set against a back drop of famous Sennett film characters such as the Keystone Kops, Fatty Arbuckle and of course Mabel Normand and covers twenty years from 1912 to 1932. As well as being a wonderful and entertaining reminder of a film era long gone, it is a passionate and tragic story of a relationship between two people, of missed opportunity and true feelings not expressed or misquoted.
