15 Synopsis It is 1955, in a small mid-Western American town. Tomboy Natalie pumps petrol, works as a mechanic at her father’s filling station and dreams of riding off on her motorbike with the man of her dreams. Amongst the town’s characters are Natalie’s widowed father Jim, her nerdy best friend and secret admirer Dennis, earthy Sylvia who runs the town’s local bar, Sylvia’s young and dewy eyed daughter Lorraine, the long suffering Earl the town sheriff, the town’s stuffy and humourless mayor Matilda, Matilda’s dutiful son Dean, and the beautiful curator of the town’s new Museum of Culture, Miss Sandra. Into this sleepy town rides the leather-jacketed, guitar-playing ‘bad boy’ roustabout Chad on his motorbike. When he stops to ask Natalie to fix his bike, and in doing so introduces his wild rebel music to the townsfolk, he breathes new life and awakens the spirit of romance into the town, starting a chain of events that includes mis-matched couples, mistaken identities, star crossed lovers and unrequited passions. After many misunderstandings with much confusion and hilarity along the way, all ends well, the right couples end up together, the townsfolk celebrate their newfound joy of romance and passion, and Natalie realises her dream of riding off into the sunset with her true love. Background All Shook Up was developed in 2004 at the height of the jukebox musical craze, as a vehicle for a collection of Elvis Presley hits. Like the relationship between ABBA and Mamma Mia, the show is not a musical biography of Elvis’ life, but a stand alone plot that encompasses over 25 of Elvis’ hits to progress the story. The book was written by Joe DiPietro (author of the sleeper hit I Love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change), who decided to use the plot of the Shakespeare comedy Twelfth Night as the basis for his story, perhaps to lend a touch of class to the proceedings. The show was written to evoke a real air of 50s nostalgia, a la Happy Days and Grease, but with some modern themes thrown in for good measure (sexual identity, racial tolerance). Although the lyrics are quoted as being written by a number of famous songsmiths (Carl Perkins, Leiber and Stoller, and Otis Blackwell amongst others), Elvis is also credited as being a co-author on a number of the tracks (Love Me Tender, Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t Be Cruel, All Shook Up). However, it is thought that the truth is that he never actually wrote any lyrics but that his manager Colonel Tom Parker ‘persuaded’ songwriters to add his name for a shared writer’s credit (and additional royalties) in exchange for Elvis recording their songs. Many writers readily agreed because of the kudos and almost instant fame guaranteed by having their songs associated with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The show had a short run on Broadway of 213 performances in 2005, receiving mixed reviews and perhaps paling by comparison with the similarly themed monster hits Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys, with which it was competing. It has since received many small scale professional and non-professional revivals across the United States, but interestingly, our production tonight is only the fourth Australasian outing of the show, following productions in New Zealand, Queensland and South Australia, (all in 2011, each with sellout seasons). The show’s author, Joe DiPietro, has two other shows to his credit currently playing on Broadway – Memphis (book and lyrics), winner of four Tony awards in 2010, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score, and Nice Work if You Can Get It (book only, with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin), winner of two Tony awards in 2012. “LET’S ROCK, EVERYBODY, LET’S ROCK”
