SESSION 1 A. More Than Just Routine: Turn Everyday Infant Toddler Moments into Extraordinary! Melinda McCullen, Infant Toddler Specialist What does the word “curriculum” mean to you? If teaching skills and planning projects are the first ideas that come to mind, then this workshop will open your eyes to a new way of thinking about infant- toddler “curriculum”. Infant and toddler teachers spend a large part of the day engaged in routine caregiving responsibilities. These are key learning times! Participants will gain an understanding of why routines are essential to “curriculum”. Participants will learn how responsive and respectful one-on-one caregiving routines are opportunities for building relationships and learning, and how these routines are connected to culture and family values. This training provides information that supports ITERS-R subscales: Personal Care Routines, Listening and Talking, Interactions and Program Structure. SESSION 1 B. Creative Movement for the Mind & Body Kim Black, Children's Ballet Director Creative Movement at The Burlington School Creative Movement combines music and movement while working on gross motor skills, encouraging imagination, and creating positive energy. The importantance of vestibular, proprioception, and crossing the midline will be explained. Miss Kim will explain why each movement is important as well as any modifications that need to be made for children with special needs. Additionally, participants will learn children’s yoga practice through storytelling. C. Overcoming Barriers to Physical Activity in the Classroom Evie Houtz, Program Specialist Be Active Kids Join Be Active Kids as we help you connect with other early childhood professionals to discuss and overcome barriers to an active classroom. Discuss common barriers and challenges to providing physical activities with young children, learn about best practices, available resources, and tools to use in your programs to overcome barriers and provide developmentally appropriate physical activities. SESSION 2 D. Creating Outdoor Learning Environments for Infants and Toddlers: It’s Not Called a “Playground” Anymore. Melinda McCullen, Infant Toddler Specialist “Going Outside” is not just about what is out there but what you do when you are out there. It is in the news almost weekly; America’s children are not getting enough exercise. This training will help participants understand the benefits of taking children outside daily and provide suggestions on how to create spaces for infants and toddlers outside that support all areas of learning and introduce them to the natural environment. Finally, participants will be given ideas of what activities can be included in their outdoor spaces. This training provides information that supports ITERS-R subscales: Space and Furnishings, Personal Care Routines, Activities and Interactions. SESSION 2 E. Developmentally Appropriate Behavior: But, I’m Supposed to Act Like This! Renae Lingafelt-Beeker, Behavior Specialist Children use many different kinds of behavior as they grow and test their skills. Some of these behaviors, although appropriate for their developmental age, are still very challenging to teachers. This session focuses on understanding when children can be expected to acquire certain social-emotional skills and guides participants toward understanding, respecting and responding to developmentally appropriate behaviors. F. Rules & Regulations: Updates for Teachers and Directors Mackenzie Ratledge, Licensing Consultant Dive into the most up to date rule changes that effect your classrooms and centers. Stay on top of the latest regulations to ensure cohesiveness throughout your center. Both directors and teachers are invited to attend this informative session. KEYNOTE SPEAKER CHUCK TAYLOR Chuck is the owner of Sage Garden Care Center and has over 20 years of experience in communication training and development. Using his vast history in ministry work, he pulls in stories, examples, resources, and knowledge to equip people to leverage their strengths for the success they aspire to achieve. He is an avid learner and is constantly expanding his knowledge to help with the needs of his vast array of clients. Chuck has been elected to and served on a local town board, as the campaign chair for the United Way, and on other boards within his community. Chuck holds a bachelor’s degree in biblical studies with a psychology minor. He is certified as a life-coach through the American Association of Christian Counselors and he holds several other certifications. Chuck has been married to his wife LeeAnn since 2003 and together they have 5 children.

REGISTRATION INFO REGISTER EARLY Space is limited and session assignments are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will not be placed in a session until your payment has been received. TRAINING CREDIT Each participant will earn a total of 6 DCDEE contact hours for attending the entire conference. COST Cost includes entrance to conference, two training sessions, keynote speaker session, light breakfast, and boxed lunch. Davie County Providers: $10 Out of County Providers: $15 REGISTRATION & PAYMENT You may pay in person at our office or online at www.daviesmartstart.org.
