End of an Era: Saybrook house torn down for future developmentMany alumni from the early 1970s will remember the Chi Phi chapter house located behind campus, at 3188Saybrook Drive. Aside from being one of the several off campus homes of Rho Delta prior to the infamous“Wieuca House” it has the special distinction of having once been owned by the parents of Rho Delta Brothers Kurt(1974) and Dana Phillips (1975), who generously purchased the house and leased it to the Chapter in 1972. Whenthe Chapter moved to its next home at the corner of Peachtree-Dunwoody and Windsor Parkway, Brother Philipsmoved in and purchased the house with his wife Leslie, as he began his career as a teacher, living there till 1987.Originally built in 1957, the 3300 square foot house sat on a large 8/10 acre lot behind Oglethorpe University in theSilver Lake Estates subdivision. Like many older homes in the Brookhaven area, it has undergone several owner-ship changes and was most recently sold in October of last year, and shortly thereafter was demolished. As of thedate of this newsletter, the work on the property has stopped, but the memories of the Saybrook house live on in theminds of many Rho Delta alumni.
