Kids are missing interpersonal relationships. It’s easy to say that kids need to be back in school full-time, but they really do. They need to inter- act with other people. I still meet personally with kids and take appropriate safety precautions. I normally facilitate a workshop called ‘Project Hope’ but we are unable to hold those meetings due to the pandemic. High school students from Notre Dame, Northview and Southview, as well as college kids from the University of Toledo are reaching out to those kids in need since we can’t meet in person. I had 900 kids that received letters of support from them. In a nor- mal year we do mentoring where my team goes to elementary and junior highs and meet with kids. It’s so unfortunate that it can't happen at this time. In many families they are never asked what their interests are. I want those kids to never give up and know that I will not give up on them.” Geha plans to continue his work as long as he possibly can. “I love being a mentor and making a difference in people’s lives anyway I can,” he said. “I have a beautiful wife of 50 years, Eliza- beth, who I love spending time with, four chil- dren and grandchildren. FIRST NOVEMBER 2020 • SYLVANIA ADVANTAGE YOURGOOD.NEWS 5B A ghost story ... Who is haunting Ravine Cemetery? BY STEVEN BIEBER A favorite Halloween tradition is to tell spooky ghost stories. One local ghost story that has lived on is the tale of the woman who walks around the Ravine Cemetery looking for her husbands. There are multiple unknown factors regarding this mysterious woman. Nobody knows her identity, date of birth or the date of her death. This has made it nearly impossible for researchers to find out any information. An article from the Toledo Blade published on Oct. 31, 1970, said that the ghost is a “charming and virtuous Victorian girl, married while still in her teens.” The goal of this woman was to simply get married and have children, but she was unlucky with her love life. The article continued with, “After a few short years, her young husband died. She observed the year-long period of mourning, then married a second time. Shortly after, the second hus- band also died. Determined to have a home and children, the woman took yet a third spouse but he too met an early death.” The woman eventually gave up and never remarried. She died 30 years after her third husband. After her death there was controversy as to where she should be buried. No one could decide which of her three husbands she should be buried so she was buried by herself. Supposedly this angered the woman and caused her to haunt the cemetery. According to the article, “On the anniversary of each man’s death, the auburn-haired ghost, dressed in flowing white-robes, walks through the graveyard at dawn, searching for her dear departed.” The story originated from Irving Stow who was a caretaker of the cemetery for over 35 years. He was paid for small jobs in the cemetery as early as 1898 and began officially working in Ravine Cemetery in 1924. Stow told the story to Jamie Walker, owner of Lloyd Brother, a tombstone company since 1846, who reported the story to The Blade in 1970. The initial article did not stir much attention, but Chris Woodward’s book “Haunted Ohio III: Still More Ghostly Tales from the Buckeye State” released in 1994, drew the attention of several ghost hunters. Many of them are in search of the identity of the woman, but none of have been able to find it. A new discovery was made by a local historian that could potentially identify the woman. Gayleen Gindy, historian and contributing writer for the Sylvania AdVantage, has been working to discover the identity of the woman for 40 years. Gindy provided all the above information at the Sylvania History Museum and warned against any details given by anyone after 1970. “Anything added since 1970 has been made up. Unless they know the women, they don’t know all these details,” she stated. She is also skeptical about the existence of ghosts, saying, “I want to believe in ghosts, but I haven’t seen anything.” Gindy provided a letter that might reveal the identity of the ghostly woman. The letter discussed a woman who was married three times, lost all three of her husbands, and was much younger than her first husband. The letter states that the woman was buried in the cemetery and had a tree planted where she was buried. A relative of the woman purchased a headstone, which was placed next to the tree. It is possible that this is how the story started. Unfortunately, the woman in question had seven children, which does not meet the criteria of the ghostly woman who did not have any children. Gindy said that she has looked up every woman buried in the Ravine Cemetery and none of their information fits that of the ghost that haunts the cemetery. The identity of the woman will continue to, and most likely will forever be ... a mystery. The Woodland Lane 'Cemetery' in the 43560 zip code, once again does not disappoint with its annual Halloween display. The lights and skeleton friends (many of which are motion- activated, so drive by slowly) are busier than ever providing spooky fun for all ages. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 5 to 8 pm, Saturdays, 1 to 10 pm and Sundays, 1 to 8 pm, weather permitting. —by Mary Helen Darah The annual Halloween display of Sylvania residents Sue and Dave Spiess delights neighbors with its spooky fun.
