PLAY FOR P.I.N.K.5 | MAY 2017 ISSUE
Congratulations!PLAY FOR P.I.N.KSTONEBRIDGE RAISED MORE THAN Stonebridge hosted the annual Play for P.I.N.K. fundraiser in a really big way this year.$40,000 IN THE ANNUAL PLAY FOR P.I.N.K. As the result of our entire community volunteering, participating and contributing,FUNDRAISER FOR CANCER RESEARCH we raised over $40,000. We were thrilled to be able to show our support by hosting various activities that raise money for this organization. The events began on February 5th with a Walk/Run on a beautiful Sunday morning, followed by a Dog Show. Walk/Run participants completed the 2.4 mile Stone- bridge Circle with Gail Wachtel coming in first place. The dog show had 10 entries with dogs competing in two categories: tricks and skills, and best dressed. Congrat- ulations to Sophie (Susie) Miller for winning best tricks, and Maggie (Richard) Stolls for best costume. Thank you to Paula and David Rosenblum for donating refresh- ments to make this morning festive and fun. Esther Lansky and Sally Calavetta did a wonderful job organizing the dog show and making sure that all dogs received treats, left no messes, and cooperated with their fellow contestants. The fun continued on Tuesday, February 7th, with our Play For P.I.N.K. Golf tourna- ment, Tennis tournament, Card party, and luncheon. Over 160 Stonebridge residents and guests competed and enjoyed the many activities offered on this day. The day began early with a continental breakfast, a chance to bid on silent auction items, a putting contest, which was won by Lynne Kanofsky, tennis games and matches, and mahjong, canasta, and bridge games. This was a community-wide effort that started with a committee chaired by Lynn Baron and Cathy Shabtai and included: Sally Calavetta, Ruth Howard, Esther Lansky, Paul Levitz, Lynne Margolin, Chuck Reeder, Lori Regent, Carol Rintels, Paula Rosen- blum and Gail Schwartz. The committee met regularly to help generate excitement early on soliciting restaurants, shops, neighbors and friends for raffle prizes and potential silent auction items. As the excitement was getting closer we had mem- bers volunteering to help out to sign members up for the events and sell raffle tickets - everyone seemed to want to get involved. A special thanks to just a few of those members, not even on the committee, that went out of their way to help byobtaining special Silent Auction items, raffles, gifts, etc. These members included: Barry Frankel, Ellen Tesler, Susie Miller, Hanna Hirsch, Oleda DiMeola,Howie & Wendy Weiss, Julia & Len Hornstein, Barbara & Arthur D'Angelo, Neil Schwartz, Arlene Ackerman, Karen Estin and Paula Gould, just to name afew. To all that participated, volunteered and contributed, we could not have done this without the effort all of you have put forth, and to the Stone-bridge staff, we appreciate your professionalism, your knowledge, and your willingness to go beyond our expectations to ensure a successful event.6 | MAY 2017 ISSUE

GOLF CORNER UPCOMING EVENTS The season has come to an end, but the memories MAY will last forever. Throughout the first year as your Director of Golf, my staff and I have tried some new MEMORIAL DAY COUPLES MIXER - MAY 28TH events, as well as improved on tactics used in the past, and through this, I found that we have had an JUNE amazing season. Here are some of the highlights from this year: SUMMER COUPLES MIXER - JUNE 11TH February began with the 7th annual Couples Club Championship. We decided on a format change, JULY by adding in two divisions rather than just one. The championship division was extremely competitive, 4TH OF JULY COUPLES MIXER - JULY 4TH in fact the match came down to the final holes.Dan and Elizabeth Brumback contended against Brian and Meredith Gilbertsonfor the win. Elizabeth Brumback hit a fabulous second shot to 40 feet, ultimatelytwo putting to go two up with one to play, and Dan Brumback hit a great shotto 5 feet on the 18th hole to seal the win!Following this event was the annual Play for P.I.N.K. Charity Event. This year’sevent was one of our most efficacious yet, raising an amazing total of over$40,000. Of course, we owe a great deal of gratitude to Lynn Baron, CathyShabtai and the entire committee for making this event such a success. Many, ifnot all of us, have been affected by Breast Cancer in some way, the event createsa very relatable cause that is close to the heart.Demo Day in the dark was another event that went extremely well. This eventconsisted of demo clubs offered by Titleist, Callaway, Cobra, Taylormade, VerticalGroove, and Honma, accompanied by a lighted driving range! Representativesfrom each brand were present to help members try out new clubs and informthem of all the new technology that has been released. Following this eventwas the announcement of the winner of the LGA vs MGA battle of the sexesmatch. The LGA claimed the title, and I must say it was well celebrated! The most popular major of the year must be awarded to the Men’s and Ladies’Presidents’ Cup. This event, like the Couples Club Championship, also had aformat change. The new arrangement was made up of four 9-hole formats, allowing for all sorts of fun and for the field to become very competitive. In theend, Brian Gilbertson and Ron Bosco took the title, making it their 5th straightwin! Jill Silverman and Karen Denker shocked the competition and took homethe title for the Ladies Championship Division. As February came to a close, and March began, the Men’s and Ladies’ MemberGuest events quickly approached. Congratulations to Herb Kanter, Jeff Newmanand Gene Barnett, for an extremely successful 25th hosting of the Men’smember guest. Additionally, I must recognize Lila Weinberg, Francine Fish, andKaren Denker for the fabulous job they did on the Ladies side. If you haven’tparticipated in this event in the past, do yourself a favor, get in touch with somefriends and get them on board for next year! We can promise that it will be a dayfull of fun!On Friday, March 10th, 48 players teed up beginning at 6:45 pm and played anunforgettable 9-hole round of night golf. Each of the holes were illuminatedwith light sticks, and the constant sight of glow in the dark golf balls flyingthrough the air. It was a new experience for most of the participants, but it wasloved by all!As the days of March started to dwindle, the 2016-17 season began to come toan end. The last events consisted of the 36-hole Stroke Play Championship, andthe Match Play Championship. The participation was at an all-time high and thecourse was set up tougher than it has been all season. Congratulations to thewinners as well as all of the participants.I want to thank you all for being a part of an amazing season! TENNIS STRATEGY All players need to develop a specific strategy to play a tennis match! However, whatever your tennis level the following concepts should always be applied. 1. PLAY PERCENTAGE TENNIS. 85% of tennis points are lost as aresult of an error. Try to clear the net by a good margin; 2-3ft is a good range to avoid a net errorand keep the ball deep in the court at the same time. Play your shots down the middle and donot go for the sidelines right away, wait for an opportunity to present itself. Patience is the key!2. KEEP THE BALL IN PLAY. This is the most obvious tennis strategy. Try to be consistent and letyour opponent make errors and you will not beat yourself!3. USE YOUR STRENGTHS. If you have a good forehand use it! If you are good at volleying cometo net! If you are better at the baseline, play from there! There are many strategies you canemploy, however the above 3 concepts should always be applied! FITNESS CORNER Summer is knocking on our doors and while some of our members are already packing to go up north, most of us will be here enjoying the many events and amenities Stonebridge has to offer. In the Fitness Center, we will keep as busy and energized as always, offering many classes and services to keep your summer exciting and healthy! In this edition of our newsletter, I would like to focus on the importance of breathing which is related to our wonderful Yoga Classes. Many of us tend to overlook that Yoga is actually a breathing exercise more than anything else. It does require a lot of flexibility, more than that, however, the ability to do and maintain poses really depends on breathing. It is in the breath that calmness and focus is established, and from there, you open up and enable yourself to emerge into yoga practice. At the same time, your breathing technique yields many health benefits, such as the detoxifica- tion of the body, and the development of newer, fresher blood cells. Our Yoga classes seek to provide relief from pain, support a more balanced and optimal level of functioning, lengthen and strengthen muscles and lastly, an overall wonderful mood booster. PLAY TO YOURSTRENGTHS,NOT TO YOURWEAKNESSES If you struggle with a particular part of your game, work on improving it on the practice area. Until you reach the point of being comfortable, play around that area of your game. The golf course is a place to have a plan to produce the best and most consistent results, not to try out a shot that you aren’t comfortable with. If you are like most golfers, you struggle with shots that you don’t practice that often. Imagine a Par 5. You hit a great Driver then strike a nice 3 wood for your second shot. How many times have you been left with an awkward little half wedge shot from 50 yards for your third shot? We all know this scenario doesn’t end well for most golfers. If you can’t get all of the way to the green on the second shot (or third shot), instead of hitting a 3 wood, try laying up to your favorite yardage. 100 yards is a very popular number for a lot of players. From 100 yards you can take a full swing. From 100 yards you have practiced and prepared for this shot. From 100 yards it is just like any other golf swing. The results will be much more consistent than going in without a plan. Plan to play to your Strengths, not to your Weaknesses.
