Creating long-term value for all stakeholders and positively contributing to society and the nation are key tenets of BORL policy. BORL is cognizant of its responsibility towards protection of environment and natural resources, going beyond meeting compliance across the areas of air quality, water recycling, waste management, green belt development, habitat protection and energy management. Major areas of sustainable growth and some of the significant achievements during 2019-20 are listed below: Protection of environment & natural resources Fresh water consumption: BORL implemented a number of schemes towards water conservation and achieved 92% recycle in 2019-20. As a result, BORL achieved 8% reduction in fresh water consumption over 2018-19, in spite of refinery capacity augmentation by 130%. GHG emission: Reductions in GHG emission as tCO2/MT Crude achieved 25% in past 5 years and 4% in 2019-20. This was achieved in spite of enhanced complexity in operation due to BS VI fuel production. Plastic waste: Use of PET bottles stopped in offices resulting in reductions of about 80,000 PET bottles per annum, which is equivalent to 900 KG and 5,400 CO2e. Further, under drive to ‘Eliminate single use plastic’, about 12 tons of single use plastic was collected in 2019-20, which was disposed through approved co-processing. Solid waste management: BORL implemented a robust waste management policy towards Reduction, Reuse or Replacement of solid wastes and achieved 96% in-house recycle/reuse of waste in 2019-20. Greenbelt development: BORL has planted more than 3.7 lakh trees around refinery, township and nearby villages, which has resulted in reduction of 8,179 tCO2e. In 2019-20, BORL planted 10,700 trees. Energy management Specific energy consumption: Refinery achieved Specific Energy (MBN) reduction of 6% in 2019-20 over 2018-19. In BEE PAT-2 cycle, BORL achieved reduction of 10.6 MBN over target (13.3%), i.e. MBN 69.2 in 2018-19 against target of 79.8. Energy conservation: Number of innovative ENCON projects implemented as part of refinery debottlenecking project helped in achieving reduction of 24860 Metric Ton Oil Equivalent (MTOE) per annum. Some of the projects are hybrid ejector system with Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump, innovative flare gas recovery system and power recovery turbine. Renewal energy: BORL installed two solar power generation (4.4 MWp+140 kWp) at dispatch terminal & refinery. Energy efficient lighting: In 2019-20, 2153 nos. of conventional light fittings are replaced with energy efficient LED lighting, resulting in savings of 128 MTOE per annum.
