Why Butterwick? Unlike the majority of charities, the services supplied by Butterwick Hospice Care are relevant to every single member of the community including you and me, our families, colleagues and customers. Every year the Hospice freely cares for over two thousand local people from the youngest baby to the oldest pensioner at a cost of over £10,000 a day. This is only possible thanks to the generous support of local people, organisations and businesses. Over the last three decades we have built up an enviable, valuable profile and reputation for providing an excellence of care and are considered by many as the local charity worthy of support. In fact in Stockton alone, one in eight households financially support the Hospice every month. Our Corporate engagement programme has steadily grown However, more support is always needed as we respond to the over recent years and we have been delighted to welcome needs of local people and their families facing life limiting and new Partners and Supporters who represent the cream of the progressive illness. region’s companies and professional practices. HRH The Princess Royal Visits Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, as Royal Patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, visited the MND First Contact Group at Butterwick Hospice on Friday 13th January 2017. Her Royal Highness met people living with MND and their families/ carers, made a speech, unveiled a plaque and signed the visitors’ book. The MND First Contact Group is provided by Butterwick Hospice and funded from charitable donations. The group is also supported by the MND Association and the MND Care Centre at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. This collaborative venture has been developed to provide increased support and care to people living with MND in the area, with a particular emphasis on securing earlier access to palliative and Hospice services. Many of the patients attending are still working, and living life as independently as possible and potentially at an early stage, in the progression of their illness, when the prospect of visiting the Hospice may be daunting. The First Contact Group overcomes this barrier by offering easy access to expert advice, peer support, complementary therapies and a wide range of other Hospice supportive services. Results from the Group have been impressive, with patients and their carers greatly valuing and benefiting from the exemplary care and support provided. About Motor Neurone Disease (MND) ● MND is a progressive disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. ● It attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work.
