A short story written for Caden‟s third birthday by Chuck Carlson Illustrations by Lin Carlson July 2008

Once there were two big black dogs called Malachi and Moria. 2

Malachi was the big boy dog who wore a blue collar and had a diamond of white on his chest. 3

Moria was the big girl dog. She wore a pretty red collar. 4

They were brother and sister and loved to run and fetch balls and sticks. 5

One day in their front yard, while they were chasing a big blue ball, 6

they heard their master say, 7

Now neither one of them knew what a “CAT” was, but it sounded exciting and fun! 8

Moria started to run back and forth looking for the “CAT.” 9

Malachi did too. He kept the big blue ball in his mouth. 10

He looked at Moria and said, “Wooorssss dah „at?” What he really said was, “Where‟s the CAT?” but because he had a ball in his mouth it sounded funny. 11

Moria said, “CAT? CAT? I don‟t know what a „CAT‟ is... Maybe Ceasar knows.” 12

Now Caesar was the dark gray and white cat that lived next door. He got that name because he sat on his porch like a great king. 13

Malachi and Moria ran straight up to him and asked, “Good Caesar have you seen a „CAT‟ around here?” 14

Caesar cocked his head and said very proudly, “Well, no I haven‟t. Have you looked around the corner?” 15

Malachi and Moria looked at each other and off they went. They ran around and around the corner so many times 16

that they finally fell down “dog - tired” with their tongues hanging out ...and went fast to sleep. 17

Their master came and picked them up and gently carried them to their beds. 18

Caesar smiled to himself and said very quietly… “Those big silly dogs,” 19

and turned over and went to sleep. 20
