Page 05 MEMOIR May Issue – 2022 “If one man can destroy everything, why can't one girl change it?” Malala Yousafzai became an international symbol of the fight for girls’ education after she was shot in 2012 for opposing Taliban restrictions on female education in her home country of Pakistan. In 2009, Malala had begun writing a blog under a penname about the increasing military activity in her home town and about fears that her school would be attacked. After her identity was revealed, Malala and her father Ziauddin continued to speak out for the right to education. The Taliban’s attack on Malala on 9th October 2012 as she was returning home from school with her friends received worldwide condemnation. In Pakistan, over 2 million people signed a right to education petition, and the National Assembly ratified Pakistan's first Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill. In 2013, Malala and her father co-founded the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls' education and to empower girls to demand change. In December 2014, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Secretary-General António Guterres designated Malala as a United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017 to help raise awareness of the importance of girl’s education.

They inspire them to keep their heads up and not let the horrible things unfolding in the world break them or take away their youth. Lyrics Here I am, stuck on this couch - Scrolling through my notes Heart was broken, still no growing, nah Waking up to headlines - Filled with devastation again My heart is broken -But I keep going Pain, but I won't let it turn into hate - No, I won't let it change me Never losing sight of the one I keep inside Now, I know it - Yeah, I know it CHO: You can't take my youth away - This soul of mine will never break As long as I wake up today - You can't take my youth away // It's hard to sleep at night - Oh, and what's outside? Feeling hopeless - I need focus You hit me with words - I never heard come out your mouth To be honest - I don't want it, no Pain, but I won't let it turn into hate No, I won't let it change me CHO: Pain, but I won't let it turn into hate ….// CHO:
