Use of Math in Art -Ridhima Sharma -X C
How are math and art related? ✓Mathematics and art are related in a variety of ways ✓Mathematics has itself being described as an art motivated by beauty ✓Mathematics can be discerned in art such as music dance painting architecture sculpture and textiles . ✓Mathematics and art have a long historical relationship. Artists have used mathematics since the 4th century BC when the Greek sculptor Polykleitos wrote his canon, describing the proportions of human beings on ratio of 1: 2
• “While mathematics can assist in the aesthetic appeal of visual art, visual art is able to detect mathematical concepts in an elegant effective manner.”
What is Mandala Art? • Mandala painting is a symbolic picture of the universe, the circle that represents wholeness, totality, infinity, timelessness, and unity. Mandala is famously known as a spiritual and ritual symbol in many Asian cultures. • It can also be used as an aid to meditation, helping the meditator to envision how to achieve the perfect self.
How is math used in Mandala art… • The term Mandela is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning circle . • Mandela's translate complex mathematical expressions into simple shapes and forms • They show how the basic patterns governing the evolution of life workout the most beautiful results . • Mandalas are rich in mathematics circle geometry reflective and rotational symmetry and provide useful practice with geometry tools including rulers, compasses and protractors .
Diving deeper.. • Sri yantra or yantra of creation is the most revit of all Hindu yantras there is a mysterious beauty that arises in the way that 9 diverse triangles interlinked to form a state of perfect balance and harmony ,It also has 33 smaller triangles . • The golden ratio or its mathematical term ratio is a mathematical principle that pervades the universe .this principle can be sound from molecules including the DNA molecule to spiral galaxies it is a universal relationship that exists between 2 elements of equation in a natural situation in sacred geometry the golden ratio can be expressed in numbers lens shapes and forms which include golden proportion triangles rectangles and spirals .
The WARLI ART • It uses a set of basic geometrical Shapes (circles ,triangles, school squares, lines )which came from observation of nature by tribal people • circle represents sun and moon • triangle represents mountains and pointed trees • square represents space of land • warli is one of the oldest forms of Indian folk art and has its origin in valley region of Maharashtra . Relation with Math • Warli art can be related to mathematics on the basis of geometrical shapes and lines used in it . • the use of congruent triangles can be seen here . • Triangles and circles are the most commonly used shapes in the art. • use of various line segments to create different objects and to give detailing to them can be seen. • It also uses free hand draw polygon.
How congruent triangles are related to Warli art ? • Warli painting is simple and linear with the maximum use of triangular shapes . • the Warli style of painting commonly have geometrical shapes mainly like circles ,squares ,and triangles to draw various parts . • For example a human figure would be drawn by using a circle as the face ,2 inverted triangles as the body and simple lines as arms . • A complete picture is a combination of various such figures ,showing mainly a village lifestyle . • As the universal energy concept have the upward facing triangle representing the male and the downward facing triangle representing the woman .
