Paper 1 Reading and Writing ΟTEΝSΕT Anna Pete’s, the new restaurant in town Bill Thomas I’ve already been to Pete’s five times, and it only opened a month ago! It’s my favourite place to go with my friends at the weekend. We love it there! I like the fact that lots of young people go there and they play good music too. I don’t like burgers, so I can’t say anything about them, but I think the pizzas are the best in town. They’re fantastic! I went to Pete’s for the first time last Saturday afternoon, and I had a great time there! I thought the restaurant was very nice and the waiters were friendly too. I had a burger, which was great, and a lovely salad. I didn’t pay for my meal because I went with my parents, but it was quite cheap. I’m sure I will go to Pete’s again, perhaps with my friends, or with my sisters. I’ve been to Pete’s restaurant with my friends for lunch a few times, but I don’t like it very much. The music is very loud so everyone has to shout. You can’t hear yourself think! The food was OK, but it wasn’t anything special. I don’t think it’s better than the food you get at other restaurants in town. I think Pete’s is popular because it’s the newest restaurant in town. TEST 1 9

A trip to France By Tina Jones, age 15 I’ve just returned from a school exchange programme in Paris, the capital of France. An exchange programme is a bit like a school trip to a foreign country, but students stay with families, and they have to go to school there too. I stayed with a very kind family, and I became good friends with the daughter, Marie. Marie is coming to stay with us for a week next month, and I can’t wait! We’re going to have a great time! I really enjoyed the trip, but school was difficult because all the lessons were in French, of course! But we only had lessons in the morning, so it wasn’t too bad. In the afternoons we usually went sightseeing. We went to the Eiffel Tower, of course, but it’s very high, and I didn’t want to look down, so I asked my teacher to take photos for me! We also went to the Louvre, which is the world’s largest art museum, but some days we had some free time to go shopping and do other things. One afternoon we walked along the River Seine and watched all the artists there. We spent the evenings with our families, which was nice. Most evenings we had dinner at home, but we went out to a restaurant a few times. French food is delicious, but they eat a lot of bread here, and they drink a lot of coffee too. I don’t drink coffee at home, but Marie drinks it every day! TEST 1 10
