1Video & Life Skills Things to do in my town 1 Watch the video. Where does Cameron live? Hi, my name is Cameron. When I was younger I lived right in the middle of Chicago. Now I live in a town outside the city, called Glenview. Life out here is very different than life in the city. There are lots of things to do for fun in Chicago. Kids my age can go to Navy Pier. Navy Pier is a fair near the lake. And they can ride the Ferris wheel or see a play in the Shakespeare Theater. They can see a Cubs or Sox baseball game. Or visit restaurants in ‘The Loop’. ‘The Loop’ Life Skills: Respect Others is what we call the central part of Chicago. In my town now, there isn’t a lot to do other than go shopping. ● Consider other people’s needs and Most weekends my friends and I spend time at the mall trying on preferences clothes or smelling scented candles. My friends and I all take part in the school play. I’m in the band so I play the music for the shows. Band is a great way to make new friends. I met my best friend Andrew because he plays drums like me. I wanted to get better at playing the snare drum so I asked him to teach me what he knows, now we talk every day. Life in a city like Chicago moves very fast. If you can get a good job in a bank or a big company you can make lots of money. But although there are lots of things you can do for fun, most people don’t have the time to do them. In a smaller town like mine, everything is a bit slower. There are lots of parks where you can ride your bike or read a book. My brother loves to skateboard. I’m trying to learn to do it. I’m not very good but I’m getting better at it. When I moved from Chicago to a new town it took me some time to get used to all the changes. But I made new friends and found new things to do and now it feels like home. Thanks for watching! See you soon. 2 Watch the video again. Does Cameron 3 Pairwork Ask and answer questions about talk about doing these things in Chicago (C) what you like doing in your free time. or Glenview (G)? But people like the city’s progressive politics, the importance of the environment and the acceptance of difference. During lockdowns people that usually work in restaurants prepare meals for those who really need it. Neighbors hang the sourdough starters you need to make bread from trees. The many pedestrian areas make the city’s hundreds of little parks feel like a giant street party. And the weather means you can eat outside all year round. 2 A city always full of tourists and people looking for crazy nightlife, since the pandemic Amsterdam is changing its image. It is trying to become a modern, environmental city. Popular activities include taking a walk in nature, and participating in outdoors sports, theater, movies or music events. As restaurants close, bakeries, cafeterias and street-food takeaways open. Museums and galleries are allowing only one visitor per 5m2 – so plenty of room to enjoy famous works of art. It is easy to walk or bike around the city or you can take an open ferry sightseeing trip along the canals. Despite the difficult events of recent years, people in 3 Manchester are strong and proud. They always come together as a community by free mental health support to frontline workers, or free meals to vulnerable locals. Manchester is also a very creative city – home of Factory Records, and bands like the Fall, the Smiths, the Stone Roses and Oasis. It is currently building a new international venue for music, theater, performance and art. But people also like exploring the places to eat and drink along the canal; visiting the Victorian markets, or the many coffee shops in the city center. 18

People who made history ANNE FRANK (1929–1945) Anne Frank lived in Amsterdam as a teenager during World War II. She was an author and kept a diary where she carefully noted down her experiences during the war as a young Jewish girl. Then the Nazis caught and sent her family to a concentration camp. Sadly, Anne didn’t survive the war: she died in the camp in 1945. After the war, ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ quickly became an international bestselling novel and showed a unique perspective on life at this difficult point in history. SIR EDMUND HILLARY (1919–2008) Sir Edmund Hillary was an explorer and mountain climber. He came from Auckland in New Zealand. Hillary and his guide from Nepal, Tenzing Norgay, were the first people to climb to the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain the world, in 1953. Five years later he reached the South Pole, and then the North Pole, too, becoming the first person to reach both poles and the summit of Everest. In his later years, Hillary devoted himself passionately to helping the Sherpa people: he established the Himalayan Trust, setting up many schools and hospitals in Nepal. FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE (1820–1910) Florence Nightingale was an English nurse who helped soldiers during the Crimean War. She worked hard with a lot of nurses and together they saved many lives. She made hospitals cleaner places and she clearly demonstrated the importance of hygiene in hospitals. Nightingale was the founder of modern nursing: in 1860, she started her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. It was the first proper nursing school in the world, and is now part of the renowned King’s College. Her birthday (12 May) became the annual International Nurses Day. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. (1929–1968) Martin Luther King Jr. was an African-American civil rights activist. He didn’t believe in violence and he bravely organized peaceful demonstrations about human rights. He wanted the USA and the whole world to accept people of all races. King was one of the greatest public speakers of modern times, and he is an inspiration for many people today. Did you know he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his work combating racial inequality? 22
