3 Language Skills Reading 1 Read the text about the Johari Window. Where does the name come from? The Johari Window The first time you hear about the Johari Window, you might imagine that it is something mystical or spiritual. In fact, it is a psychological tool to help us understand ourselves and others. It is frequently used for team building in the workplace or in other peer group settings. This tool was devised by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham at the University of California in the United States in 1955.They were looking at how groups worked and devised this simple and useful tool for illustrating and improving self-awareness and mutual understanding between individuals within a group. They called their model the Johari Window after themselves, a combination of their first names, Joe and Harry. The Johari Window essentially divides our Here is the list of adjectives used: interaction with the world around us into four parts, able, dependable, intelligent, patient, sensible, accepting, dignified, much like four glass panes of a traditional window, introverted, powerful, sentimental, adaptable, energetic, kind, as you will see in the diagram below. To perform proud, shy, bold, extroverted, knowledgeable, quiet, silly, brave, the exercise, you give the group fifty-five adjectives friendly, logical, reflective, spontaneous, calm, giving, loving, and each person chooses five or six that they feel relaxed, sympathetic, caring, happy, mature, religious, tense, describe their own personality. We might however let our ‘significant others’ see some aspects of this private area. 4 The Unknown Self is that part of ourselves neither we or other people really know and actually might never find out about.
