The Veluwemeer Aqueduct The Veluwemeer aqueduct is one of the world's shortest aqueducts and one of the world's most fascinating places, which is located across the N302 road and is part of a lake of the Veluwemeer. The route connects Flevoland, the world's most oversized island, to the rest of the Netherlands. In 2002 the structure was completed. It is a marvel of modern design and engineering. For decades, the lakes managed water levels and the depth of local groundwater wells in the surrounding region. Lakes do have valuable habitats for wildlife and are also entertainment sites for residents. Drawbridges, ferries, and tunnels were all examined during the project's early design stages as possible options for completely getting the road across the lake. But these were all rejected in favour of a new solution. N302 is a key highway that is considered impractical and inefficient. A tunnel, if constructed, would have needed more time and money. Engineers chose a different approach: a water bridge to allow vehicles and waterborne traffic to travel underwater. With around 28,000 cars passing through each day, engineers decided to build the canal above the N302 highway during the planning process. Then the aqueduct was finally chosen. Unlike drawbridges or other highway constructions, the water bridge design allows for continual traffic flow over the road and across the aqueduct. There are a series of constructed barriers to keep most of the N302 highway above water; however, the N302 aqueduct's short 17-meter span plunges into the lake. Small boats and other watercraft with a shallow draft can cross the Veluwemeer Aqueduct, which is just 3m deep. On both sides of the road, pedestrian walkways allow pedestrians to cross the road and boats. Cyclists also have dedicated bike lanes on the roadways. Nirmaan | 3

Although a bridge was considered a more conventional alternative, it was significantly more expensive than the more acceptable US$61 million cost of the aqueduct design. The small aqueduct design was also considered a reasonable decision, given that the site needs to handle colossal water flow. Concrete and steel sheet piling was used in the construction of the Veluwemeer Aqueduct to support the weight of the water and prevent floodwater from leaking onto the road. The water bridge supporting the added weight of passing boats follows Archimedes' principle. This phenomenon occurs when a floating body displaces an equivalent volume of water. Water is forced outwards by the open ends of the bridge, which keeps the weight in balance. The Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a shallow 3m deep water bridge that allows for small boats and other shallow-draft water vehicles to pass over the road safely and efficiently. source:- https://interestingengineering.com/culture/the-netherlands-unique-water-bridge https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veluwemeer_Aqueduct https://www.engineerine.com/2022/03/the-veluwemeer-aqueduct-why-dutch.html?m=1 Nirmaan | 4

Elizabeth line- London's New Railway The Elizabeth line is formally known as TFL Rail. The Elizabeth line stretches more than 100km from Reading and Heathrow in the west through central tunnels across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. The new railway built by Crossrail Ltd will stop at 41 accessible stations, ten unique, and is expected to serve up to 200 million people each year. This Elizabeth line helped to decrease the duration while traveling from Abbey Wood to Paddington. The capacity of this fully open rail is increased by 10%, reducing congestion and crowding. With South-eastern connections at Abbey Wood and Woolwich Arsenal, journey times across the capital will be slashed. The journey from Abbey Wood to Paddington has been halved to just 29 minutes. The step-free station will be a new link to one of the busiest shopping destinations in the UK and reduce congestion at Oxford Circus station, which will help decrease the crowd at the station. It is 200m long, with nine walk-through carriages. It can bear 1500 passengers at one stretch. There are so many extra features like information screens and air conditioning, and it has separate spaces for buggies and luggage on the train. Dedicated wheelchair spaces are also provided. It has Energy-saving intelligent lighting and temperature controls. Three sets of double doors along each carriage make it quicker and easier for customers to get on and off the train. It has a speed of 90mph possible on outer sections of the railway.
