THE KALESHWARAM LIFT IRRIGATION PROJECT The front view of KLIP The Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project (KLIP), is currently the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project, which was built on river Godavari in the Bhupalapally district of Telangana. Its farthest upstream influence is at the confluence of the Pranahita and Godavari rivers. The Pranahita River is itself a confluence of various smaller tributaries including the Wardha, Penganga and Wainganga rivers which combine to form the seventh-largest drainage basin on the sub-continent, with an annual discharge of more than 280TMC. It remains untapped as its course is principally through dense forests and other ecologically sensitive zones such as wildlife sanctuaries. Being a multi-purpose project, it is used for irrigation, power and transportation. It is being operated by Telangana’s Irrigation Department which was built with a construction cost of Rs. 1.2 lakh crore. Its construction dated back to 2016 and till its opening date on 21 June 2019, nearly 45000 workers toiling in three shifts per day and night worked on this gigantic project. Barrage and pumphouses of KLIP The Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project is divided into 7 links and 28 packages, spanning a distance of approximately 500km through 13 districts and utilizing a canal network of more than 1800km. The project aims to produce a total of 240 TMC (195 from Medigadda barrage, 20 from the Sripada Yellampalli project and 25 from groundwater) of which 169 has been allocated for irrigation, 30 for Hyderabad municipal water, 16 for miscellaneous industrial uses and 10 for drinking water in nearby villages, with the remaining being estimated for evaporation loss. The project aims at increasing the total culturable command area (the sustainable area which can be irrigated after accounting for both upstream and downstream factors) by 18,25,000 acres.ft across all 13 districts in addition to stabilizing the existing CCA.

Four major pumping facilities manage the project’s outflow, the largest at Ramadugu (Medaram, Annaram and Sundilla) is also likely to be the largest in Asia. This particular multi-purpose lift irrigation project requires seven 140MWH pumps, which are designed and manufactured, especially for this project by the BHEL. The Engineering giant Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited built 15 of 22 pump houses and undertook a major part of the project. Drone view of KLIP Pumps lifting out water The Telangana government’s flagship scheme – Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project has received praise from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). It has been recognised as an enduring symbol of engineering progress and partnership by the ASCE, which organised the World Environmental and Water Resources congress in Canada, USA. Undoubtedly, this project has transformed Telangana into the New rice bowl of India, irrigating lakhs of acres with two cropping cycles per year. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link (officially One of the coolest facts known as Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link) is a about Mumbai’s much- 5.6 km long, 8-lane-wide bridge that loved bridge is the fact links Bandra in the western borders that its weight is equal of Mumbai with Worli in central to the weight of 56,000 Mumbai. It is the longest sea bridge, African Elephants put as well as the 4th longest bridge in India after Bhupen Hazarika Setu, together, after all, Dibang River Bridge, and Mahatma 90,000 tons of cement Gandhi Setu. It is considered one base for the bridge. To support the bridge column, large of the most unique parts of Mumbai. concrete boxes known as caissons were constructed on the land. Though the construction of the sea These caissons were then floated to their designated positions link started in 2000, it was and sunk onto the foundation platform. The caissons were filled completed only in 2010 after being with concrete to attach them to the seabed. Pillar construction opened to public use in 2009. The involved erecting vertical structures on top of the submerged completion of the sea link was caissons. These columns act as support structures for the bridge delayed by five years. The 5.6 km deck. Reinforced steel and concrete were used to construct the bridge cuts the travel time between pillars. The bridge deck was constructed using a segmental Worli and Bandra towns from 60 to construction method. Precast concrete segments, weighing up to 90 minutes to under 10 minutes. 200 tonnes each, were fabricated off-site and transported to the construction site. The segments were then lifted and joined together to form the bridge deck. The cable-stayed bridge is supported by cables connected to tall towers. The towers were constructed using reinforced concrete and were designed to withstand the loads imposed by the bridge. Once the towers were erected, high-strength steel cables were attached to them. These cables were then extended and fixed to the bridge deck, providing the necessary support and stability. After the main construction was completed, finishing touches were added. This included the installation of safety barriers, lighting systems, road surfacing, and other infrastructure necessary for the functioning of the bridge.

It was designed as the first cable-stayed bridge BWLS's Largest Pylon towers are 128 m (420ft) high to be constructed on open seas in India. The superstructure of the viaducts was the heaviest precast segment to be built in India. They were built using a span-by-span method using an overhead framework through a series of vertical and horizontal curves. The 20,000-tonne Bandra- end span of the bridge deck is supported by stay cables within a very close tolerance of deviations in plan and elevation. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link was the first infrastructure project in Mumbai to use seismic arresters. These will enable it to withstand earthquakes measuring up to 7.0 on the Richter scale. The sea link consists of eight lanes, with four lanes in each direction. The bridge is designed to handle around 37,500 vehicles per day. The sea link's design includes an elegant cable-stayed structure, which adds to its aesthetic appeal. The bridge's lighting system is particularly notable, with LED lights illuminating the structure at night, creating a visually stunning display. It is a tolled bridge, with toll booths located at the Bandra and Worli ends. Institution of Engineers (India) National Award: BWSL's main cable The sea link was honoured with the Institution of Engineers (India) National Award for Excellence in Built Environment in 2010. Indian Merchants' Chamber (IMC) Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award: In 2010, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link received the IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award in the Infrastructure (Construction) category.
