submission. Paul Graham’s (b. 1956) exhibi on [3]’Whiteness of the Whale’ [4] (2015) demonstrated the crea viteuse of posi oning on the gallery wall. I was also influenced by the overexposed images in the ’American Night’ (2003)series challenging the viewer to work harder at ’seeing’.I have posi oned the image pairs closer together on the horizontal axis rather than centre them on the pageto convey a ’working together’ debate rather than taking an entrenched immovable posi on.References1. I have u lised the ’out of focus’ technique to convey an element of confusion requiring the viewer tostudy the image closely to evaluate the content. Paul Graham had used this to extreme with his over exposed imagescontras ng against his colour saturated suburban streets of America. All of the images were hand held although it would have been useful to use a tripod for longer exposures offast moving express trains. Unfortunately the use of tripods is forbidden on railway premises for safety reasons. Itwould have also been interes ng to get some images at night but again the tripod issue was a constraint. The submission is presented in book style with 2 images across a 2 page spread. My plan is to get a physicalbook produced as part of my assessment submission.Demonstra on of Crea vityI have enjoyed taking an o en photographed subject and a emp ng to create something ’ar s c’. I researched anumber of ideas and found that I started with a host of op ons and whi led them down as I progressed. This wasunlike any of my previous assignments which evolved and grew in to the finished product.Ideas that didn’t make the final submission were the use of projec on and text. My tutor had pointed me toVictor Burgin (b. 1941) who had u lised graphics and text in some of his work, most notably UK76 (1976) and TheOffice at Night (1986). Another photographer, Will Jennings used text for one of his series called ’Pedestrianisa on’2010.I really liked the idea of using philosophical quotes and found the author and thinker Mehmet Murat ildan (b .1965), who had a large quan ty a ributed to him on the goodreads.com website. I was par cularly taken by hisquotes on debate, truth and lies. The submission’s final des na on was closer to the clean and unfussy work of Rinko Kawauchi although I hope tou lise the projec on and text ideas in future assignments.62

ContextAs part of my learning on the ’content and context’ discussion my tutor referred to Batchen’s balanced view being themost useful, ’but only when you’ve explored the extremes of both’. My assignments so far had delivered aesthe cimages, although towards the mundane end of the spectrum requiring a certain understanding of my originalinten on. With this assignment I have a empted a more abstract set of images, moving towards the extreme end ofthe ’context’ scale.Ini ally I was going to concentrate on the capitalist aspect of railway priva sa on and portray the greed asso-ciated in siphoning off profits to overseas shareholders. However, it was the aspect of poli cal debate that resonatedmost as I progressed where I felt that railway na onalisa on could s ll be used as the subject. It also centred on theidea of ’pairing’ photos to represen ng two sides of a debate.Quality of OutcomeI have chosen to produce a series of diptychs to convey the two sides of a debate. The final selec ons have beenpaired based on similar a ributes – colour pale e, objects and shapes. This assignment was influenced by the’Illuminance’ book by Rinko Kawauchi. Her series was a narra ve of her life and presented the lifecycle of the naturalworld and the world she encountered across 15 years of image taking. The images for this assignment were produced over 4 to 6 weeks and it will be interes ng to see if I can pro-duce a ’new concept’ series based on my body of work over a longer period - pulling pieces together to present anew idea.Paul Graham has been a major influence throughout the course and his use of diptychs and triptychs in mun-dane situa ons is one that I would like to work on as I progress. 63
