The most challenging part was the materials for the envelope. Making the skin of the building. To achieve such architecture, we must think about different functions, con- struction logics and technical systems. “Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polyester (GFRP) were chosen as ideal cladding materials, as they allow for the powerful plasticity of the building’s design while responding to very different functional demands related to a variety of situations: plaza, transitional zones and envelope”. The seams solved few technical problems. Also, they thought about the lighting design strategy that differentiates the day and night reading of the building. From most anywhere in town, the proud architectural statement. hall is seemingly invisible, only coming into view when you reach its level. What first drew me to Henning Larson was their insistent integra- tion of greenery and nature into their designs. Even large scale apartments they designed featured lush patios here and there. As I looked more into their work, I fell in love with their use of irregular geometries in the profiles and fa- cades of many of their designs. Many of these geometries take inspiration from the environments which the buildings exist in, mak- ing them never feel out of place. I quickly got a feel for how they liked their buildings not only to look, but also how to feel.

Harpa Concert Hall (2011) Henning Larsen The Wave in Vejle (2018) Tyler Dahl — ARE 4600 — Anthony Denzer The concert hall was one of the first buildings to catch my eye. The 3-dimensional “quasit-bricks” are designed to make the building reacte to light dynamically. At night, LEDs illuminate the façade, to any desired color, pattern, letter, etc. The buildings interior is mul- tifuctional, allowing for concerts, conferences, or simple social interaction. While almost entirely glass, the flat versus 3-dimensional glass creates in interesting, dy- namic dialogue on the façade of the building. Paired with the refraction or illumination of light, and this building would seem to deny the static nature of a build- ing, always showing life. Even if this were and entirely concrete building, it’s jutting and opposing geometries would be enough for the building to impressively stand out. The Wave is an apartment complex unlike any other. Existing in a primarily flat Here’s an awesome Lego of country, The Wave represents the unique rolling hills surrounding the town and The Wave. the rolling waves of the adjacent fjord. This design, once again, features shapes and forms that are not commonly seen in the architectural world. However, these forms aren’t pulled from thin air, they are influenced but nature and the heritage of the area where they’re found. This is one of the things that Henning Larsen does with their designs that I like best. It’s not complex for the sake of being complex. There’s natural and historical reason that drives most of their designs.

Bjarke Ingels Jenna Roadifer | ARE 4600 | Spring 2021 | Anthony Denzer Bjarke Ingels is a Danish architect with numerous international projects, many of which are inspired by his Danish roots. He has been known to say style is, “like a straightjacket that keeps you confined to who you were and inhibits you from who you could become.” Many people have described his style as not cohesive, which he appreciates. He gets frustrated by architects who have such an attachment to their vision of the project rather than what the client is looking for. Rather than allowing the client request to “water down” the project, he uses their requests to enhance his design. He seems to design with the mindset “form follows function” while including much more geometric details than modern architects. https://big.dk/#projects Honeycomb/Albany Marina Residences Building 1 • Resort in the Bahamas • Diagram in the top right shows Ingels concept development • Different apartment sizes, from 2 BR - Penthouses, larger on higher floors. • For each, living, dining and 1 BR faces the marina allowing for varying/ staggered layouts • Partition walls of balconies form a brick pattern and each supports the pool from the balcony above. https://big.dk/#projects-bhs

Art Deco began Fujimoto’s work around 1920 and it was a movement full of ornament and de- tail. The Bauhaus movement “responded” to Art Deco by making the lack of ornament trendy. To do the same thing, I have to look at what’s going on right now in architecture and figure out how to respond to it. Right now, Zaha Hadid is one of the most popular architects at work. Zaha creates beautiful, smooth curves in her building and I see Sou Fu- jimoto doing the complete opposite. He creates very blocky, rectangular structures that don’t even look like they are con- nected to each other. His use of greenery really enforces his eco-friendly design. He creates structures that are unlike any I’ve ever seen before and I think it gives us a look into what the future holds for architecture.
