For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified. What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us. Who will condemn? It is Christ [Jesus] who died, rather, was raised, who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? As it is written: “For your sake we are being slain all day; we are looked upon as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Responsorial: Psalm 23….……………………………………...………………….…………....…......…“Shepherd Me, O God” Gospel - John 17:20-26.………..……………………………..…………...…....………….Rev. Donald D. Bernard, M. Div. Jesus prayed for his disciples: “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.” Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. “I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” The Gospel of the Lord. TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC DRESS The roots of the traditional academic attire can be traced back to European medieval universities. The regular dress of clerics and monks contributed to the cap, gown, and hood since these were educational institutes for the clergy. In 1894, the American Intercollegiate Commission set the standards for academic dress in regard to most American universities. However, many European universities and a small number of American ones have their own designs. The square mortarboard is the headdress most commonly worn and originated from the square clerical biretta. Instead of a pom-pom, a tassel is used. The majority of gowns are black. Those wearing Bachelor’s degree gown have short pointed sleeves, while those wearing Master’s degree gowns have long sleeves closed at the front. Flowing sleeves trimmed with velvet indicate Doctoral degree gowns. The academic hood’s size and shape specify the wearer’s rank, the velvet border’s color designates the degree field, and the inner lining colors indicate the school granting the degree. For example, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette hoods are lined in red and white, while Louisiana State University hoods are in purple and gold. Those with Bachelor’s degrees wear short pointed hoods. Hoods for those with Master’s degrees are slightly longer with wider borders. Hoods for those with Doctoral degrees are even longer, square, and have a broad border. The velvet border color specifies the academic field of the degree. A light blue indicates education, while the color gold represents the field of science. Other colors and fields are royal blue for philosophy, scarlet for theology, and white for arts.
THE HISTORY OF VERMILION CATHOLIC More than 120 years ago, the pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church extended an invitation to Mother Theresa Chevrel, the foundress of the Sisters of Mount Carmel to send members of her order to begin a school here in Abbeville, Louisiana. In 1885, four sisters arrived in Abbeville and opened a school with a total enrollment of 40 girls. Four years later, boys were also allowed to attend Mt. Carmel. The 20th century saw a strong growth with students in grades 1-12. Mt. Carmel gained a reputation for religious development, academic excellence, athletic superiority, and civic pride. In the 1940s and 1950s, outstanding leaders like Mother Mary Grace Danos, O. Carm., Father LaFleur, Monsignor Paul Fusilier, and Monsignor Ignatius Martin contributed to steady enrollment and development. In the mid-1960s, the need to expand classrooms and overall space became necessary. As expansion was examined, the idea of a new high school separate from Mt. Carmel was explored. Since it would be the only Catholic high school in Vermilion Parish, the name Vermilion Catholic High School was chosen and its doors opened in September 1967. Twenty-nine years later, in 1996, Vermilion Catholic was awarded the Presidential Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Award from the United States Department of Education. This distinction confirmed the school’s goal of providing high school students of Vermilion Parish a quality Catholic education. In 2008, Vermilion Catholic was again recognized for its academic excellence when the school received accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which demonstrates a commitment to offer the best educational environment possible. Today, as we are moving through the 21st century, Vermilion Catholic High School is continuing its long and proud tradition of striving for excellence.
