Pickleball in Durango: Altitude & AttitudeThis past June, Entrada club members John and Kay Besteman, Phil and Gayle George, Richard and SandraJacobson, John and Geri Chuba, John and Margie Harris, Tony and Patti LeBron, and Tom Wheeler acceptedthe invitation of fellow Entrada club member, Merv Nugent and made the 430 mile journey to the littlewestern town of Durango, Colorado with its rich history in ranching and mining, to participate in a joint clubpickleball tournament. The tournament was held at the Dalton Ranch Golf Club where Merv serves aspickleball coordinator. The Dalton Ranch Golf Club is located in the lush Animas River Valley and issurrounded by the majestic San Juan Mountains. For many of the Entrada players, this was a greatopportunity to leave behind the hot dry dessert climate of St. Georgeand play some pickleball in the cooler temperatures of southwesternColorado at an altitude of approximately 6,500 feet above sea level. The joint club pickleball tournament was organized by Merv Nugentand Tony LeBron and involved a total of 32 players from the DaltonRanch Golf Club and the Entrada Country Club. Players were dividedinto eight 4-person teams and competed in four rounds of play and aserving contest. Following the tournament, players got together tosocialize while enjoying some food and drink. Tournament resultswere announced and team medals were presented to the followingEntrada players: John Harris – 3rd place Tony LeBron – 3rd place John Chuba – 2nd place Geri Chuba – 1st placeThe next day, the Entrada players became tourist and enjoyed some ofthe Durango area attractions including the Durango-Silverton NarrowGauge Railroad. This 3 hour 45 mile train ride travels through the Our Durango host and cook, heart of the San Juan Mountains along the Animas River to the old Mr. Merv Nugentsilver mining town of Silverton. This historic train has been incontinuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind vintage steamlocomotives and passenger cars. Another area attraction was Mesa Verde National Park located just outsideof Durango near the town of Mancos. This National Park and UNESCO site contains some of the bestpreserved Ancestral Puebloan archeological sites in the United States. The end of our stay in Durango was highlighted with an authentic ranch style barbecue at the private ranchof Donna Scott. Merv and Donna cooked up some tasty ribs, chicken, brats, and beans over an open fire.We even had a chance to play some pickleball on site while we waited for the dinner bell to sound. It was a great experience and we hope we can make this an annual event each summer. It is also our hopeand desire to reciprocate by inviting the Dalton Ranch pickleball players to experience Entrada pickleball andenjoy our great town of St. George and southern Utah in the future.

Doug Roberts Golf Tip Finding the bottom of your swing A key to playing solid fairway or short game shots is for the player to improvetheir awareness of where the bottom of their swing is occurring. I find that manyplayers that struggle with fairway shots are either too steep and chunk a lot of shotsor they try and lift the ball in the air and end up hitting a lot of thin shots that sendunwanted vibrations into their hands. The key to fairway shots and short game shots is to contact the ball in thesweet spot of the clubface. This happens when the player delivers the clubface inthe correct angle to the back of the ball and then “bottoms out” either at the ball orslightly in front of the ball. Try this drill to improve the bottom of your swing. Find a sand bunker. Takeyour normal stance. Draw a line perpendicular to your target line, in-line with yoursternum, (in the center of your stance). Now, take a swing and contact the sandeither at the line or slightly in front of the sand. This is the feeling that you want onyour fairway shots. If you find that you are contacting the sand behind the line orare missing the sand entirely, well, now you know why you struggle on fairwayshots. Improve the bottom of your swing and you will improve your center facecontact.“Ask Andrew”Question: What club repair services does the Entrada golf shop provide?Answer: The Entrada golf shop offers gripping, reshafting of select clubs, and lengthening/shortening clubs. We stock a variety of grips or can special order just about anything on the market and have them deliveredwithin a week.Entrada Ladies Team took the traveling trophy in the Desert Duel!

TURF TALKIn the month of June the Saint George area experienced 14 days at 104 or above. Entradahas never experienced this many days above 104 in the month of June. In 2010, there were10 days above 104, but this is the closest to 14 during the last 20 years. Having this stretchof heat this early in the season certainly puts our turf at risk with soil temperatures rising. The heat of June was then followed by the humidity of July adding disease pressure to thealready heat stressed turf. During this stressful period the turf has fared well and we believewe’re in position to keep most of the turf alive through the summer. We’ve taken measuresto limit the insect and disease pressure that has taken a toll on some of the turf. While wewill never have the same conditions during the summer as we had in the spring we’re still ontrack to having very limited turf loss this summer.

Associate SpotlightOver the next few weeks I’ll be interviewing members of our grounds staff to allow our members a chance toget to know them better. This week I had the pleasure sitting down with Don Polich and we had a great con-versation about golf course maintenance and our experiences. Here’s the short version of our question andanswer.Q. Don has also been involved in the cart path in-stall.Q. What do you like about working at Entrada?A.
