“Chronic Cardio” Only Speeds Up Aging and Increases Belly Fat!Conventional wisdom states that getting on a treadmill, elliptical or bike for an hour ata time will increase fat-loss and burn fat. Truth is doing this will increase your stresshormone, cortisol, which will actually decrease fat-burn and cause you to gain thatstubborn spare tire.Studies have shown that long sessions on the cardio machines will actually increasechronic inflammation and increase the aging process through increased production offree radicals. If your time at the gym is spent doing endless treadmill, there is a better way toincrease your fat-burn, improve your cardio system and slow down the aging process. You will have much better results with HighIntensity Interval training (HIIT). Tryperforming short burst of high intensitymovements (running, hill climbs, lifting heavyweight, or speeding up an exercise)interspersed with adequate rest. It has beenshown that a short 8 minute workout ofexplosive activity is much more effectivethan the long slow boring workouts oncardio machines. Leave the cardio machinesfor rehab of injuries and improve your currentlevel of fitness by adding in challengingmovements and decreasing the length ofyour session. Your results are not timedependent, but rather dependent on yourintensity. You should leave feeling like youcan’t do one more minute. Bottom line…youneed to change your routine to change yourbody! - Ann Topalian
EROSION ELIMANATION The detention area to the left side of #4 has been completed forthe last couple of months and seeded. We are starting to see somegermination of grass seedlings and we’re looking forward to more as weget a few winter days above sixty degrees and some winter rain.Seeding turf in and around the basin will achieve a few differentobjectives. The first is to eliminate erosion in and around the basin. The rocks surrounding the basin become useless if water is allowed toerode away the soil from underneath them. Another benefit to havingturf for a ground cover is eliminating some maintenance of thesurrounding area and within the basin itself. Within the basin the turfwill be un-mowed; this will allow it become deeply rooted and verycompetitive against weeds. Grasses will also be established within therock to “lock in” the rock to help with erosion. The surrounding area will be maintained to the same standardof the rough on the entire golf course. This should provide a cleanerlook and a cleaner area near the red and gold tee. While the turf will be slow to establish during the wintermonths, the young seedlings will take advantage of any days above 55 degrees and lows above 35 degrees.Seeding during the winter in Saint George is a slow process, but any amount of seed germinated inDecember and January will begin to thrive near the beginning of March.
December Golf - By Doug RobertsOne of the things I love about St. George is thechance to play winter golf. We get our occasional winterstorms that pass through but within a day or two, it clearsand it's time to tee it up! Here are some basic strategyadjustments to keep in mind when playing golf in December.Ground conditions change dramatically from morningto afternoon. In the morning the greens still play a bit frozenand approach shots to the greens will release and roll farther than normal, especiallythat first bounce. You will not be able to produce as much backspin so adjust to playa higher ball flight and be more generous in your landing areas. In the afternoons, the greens will soften and become more receptive to approach shots. With the colder December air your golf ball will tend to fly shorter. Also, ourswings tend to shorten as we dress in layers. This can decrease our clubhead speedso keep it simple and use 1 club longer than your summer yardages. My third tip is normally about the difference in green speeds in December, however our great Superintendent, Ross Laubscher is making that a mutepoint. Entrada's green speeds are still fantastic.Captain Obvious also recommends keeping your hands warm in between shotswith some cart mitts and visiting the snack bar as often as possible for a warm drink.Best wishes for everyone to be able to mix in some qual-ity December golf as you are enjoying this Holiday season!MEGA Results 12/9/15Format: 2 man shamble1st Flight1st-59 Don Bunch/John Arrington $25 each2nd-61 Rich Plante/Dave Huddleston $20 eachTie 3rd-66 Phil George/Larry Honchen, Rich Chodroff/Robert Haskin,Jerry Youngblood, Dick McCann $5 each2nd Flight1st-58 Michael Heyman/Gordon Wheeler $25 each2nd-63 Bob Weiner/Clyde Johnston $20 eachtie 3rd-64 Don Cannon/Don Smith, Bill Burnham/Joe Platt $7.50 each
