Driver – Ball Position By Doug RobertsHow high should a player tee up the ball with their driver? For a neutral (normal) starting point, tee up the ball so that half ofthe ball is visible above the crown of the driver head. This will place theequator of the ball on the top line of the driver. When struck solidly, thistee height will produce a slightly higher launch angle. High launch anglecombined with low spin for the high clubhead speed player will producemaximum distance. Even low clubhead speed players will benefit from ahigh launch angle with their driver. However, this type of player will needmore spin to aid in keeping the ball in the air longer.Where should my ball position be with my driver? For a neutral (normal) starting point, play the ball position slightly“forward” in your stance. For most players this will mean that the ball willbe in-line with their lead heel or positioned 1-2 inches “inside” the leadfoot. A simple reference is to place the ball between your sternum andyour lead foot. If you choose to tee it higher than normal, then positionthe ball more forward of normal. If you choose to tee it lower thannormal, then position the ball more towards the center than normal. =====================================================*Entrada’s Director of Instruction Doug Roberts was just named the #1 golf instructor in the state of Utah by Golf Digest. Turf Transformation Last week the staff had a great time preparing for the 2015 Anasazi. These tournaments provide the staff an opportunity to prepare the turf to the highest level and provide championship playing conditions. While we would love to have similar conditions during most of the year it usually becomes impossible with weather conditions and regular maintenance that needs to take place to ensure optimum turf health. The Anasazi and other tournaments are actually fun for our staff as it gets us back to the main reason most of us are working in golf course maintenance….to provide the very best possible playing conditions. There were no projects taking place, there were no cultural practices taking place, and there were no chemical or fertilizer applications taking place during the 3 day event. While that’s nice for the staff and me, we realize that to continue to improve the golf course all of these practices need to take place. One area that is greatly improved over the last 12 months is the edges of the greens. There are very few areas where mowers cause severe damage and essentially no weak areas on any greens. This is directly related to topdressing greens. Not only the light and frequent sand applications, but also the heavy spring application have yielded terrific results. The leveling of greens through sand topdressing has dramatically improved the overall health of the turf. Some areas were so low during the spring that ¼ of an inch of sand remained a week after the heavytopdressing. We allowed turf to grow through the sand as to level these areas and the results have beenevident during the last few months. We are now taking the same practices to the approaches and havealready had pretty good results. The goal is to keep approaches as firm and level/smooth as possible to allowgolf shots to roll onto greens, even during the summer when the golf course is softer due to more irrigation. We expect a noticeable difference to approach firmness over the next 12 months.
