Thrice in Love 287 Avenue, Tusmore, and Peter drove out to work each day, a much faster journey in the early 1980’s than it is today. Large chicken operators like Inghams were starting to expand, buying up smaller hatcheries or forcing them out of business. It was not long before they turned their eye on Anderson’s hatchery, and made Brian an offer he couldn’t refuse. He instead turned his hand to furniture, setting up Anderson Natural Classic Furniture on Waverley Avenue, Edwardstown and installing Jill as general manager and Peter as production manager. Initially, Peter would coordinate production manually with a series of hand-drawn charts. Eventually, Brian Anderson, who was a bit of an innovator, introduced computers to the office, which displaced Peter from the business. Peter & Jill then bought a small gourmet delicatessen near the corner of Tusmore Ave in 1982, despite no experience in the food industry, and set about selling high quality leg hams, cheeses, breads, pies, pasties, weets, cakes and groceries. The business was a great success with both locals and passing traffic, and the children worked as well, with Matt as Peter’s ‘right-hand man’. The shop was open from six in the morning until ten at night, seven days a week, which was absolutely exhausting. They managed this way for about three years, with Peter bringing in a turnover of a million dollars in that final year. But things started to unravel. In 1988 Peter was diagnosed with a brain tumour, requiring major surgery. After lifting the top of Peter’s skull, the surgeons thankfully determined that the tumour was benign, but this was clearly time to seel up the delicatessen and find another line of work. Around the same time, Brian Anderson had decided to expand his business by purchasing Mitre Furniture on Grand Junction Rd. Peter & Jill injected some of their own money into this venture and looked forward to the reeturns. Unfortunately, the banks decided that Anderson’s finances were not up to scratch, and they foreclosed on the loan. As General Manager, Jill became embroiled in the legal fight with creditors for Anderson’s. This took an immense toll on her health, to the point where she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite an immense effort
288 Perroomba: A History of the Whittam Family in Australia by her oncology team, the cancer spread to to her hip and then her brain. Peter and the children had to watch helplessly as Jill succumbed to the disease that was eating her from within. Peter & Jill’s daughter Katie frantically arranged her upcoming wedding so that Jill could be present, which was thankfully able to occur on 24 May 1990. However, Jill’s health quickly declined and she passed away only two months later on 9 July. During Jill’s health battle, Peter had begun sorting out the house and garden at Tusmore. He found immense solace in the garden, where he could find beauty and life as a counterpoint to the fight that Jill was gradually losing. Little did he realise it at the time, but he had just found the second great love of his life. The third love came a little later. Wendy McRae had occasionally popped into the delicatessen on Greenhill Road on the way to and from her home in nearby Waterfall Gully. She had spoken to Peter across the counter, but nothing more. Wendy had been going through her own struggles with her marriage, as her husband, a doctor, ran off with a younger nurse. Some time after Jill’s death, Peter and Wendy crossed paths and began talking about their respective experiences of grief and loss. The deep intelligence of Wendy, a professor of sociology, attracted Peter, and their relationship gradually developed. Wendy’s daughters were skeptical of Peter, particularly Kate, who was initially hostile to another man who may end up hurting her mother once again. With patience, Peter was able to win over Wendy’s daughters and show them that he would treat her with nothing but respect. Peter moved in with Wendy at her home at Waterfall Gully as he also searched for a new job. Without a strong education including degrees or certificates, the fifty-three-year-old Peter was all but unemployable during the big recession of the early 1990s. He began gardening for some acquaintances, and word-of- mouth brought in more clients from the eastern suburbs. Finally, Peter had found his passion, taught by the hand of his father so many years before at Mayfield. As the saying goes, “if you do what you love, you’ll never work another day in your life”. Although the pay was not great, it was what he was born to do, and he enjoyed it immensely. Wendy’s job at the university paid well, and they lived a comfortable life. However, the cruelest blow was yet to come. In the early 2010’s, Wendy’s behaviour began to change. It was not obvious at first, and her sister noticed it before Peter. Forgetting things is fairly normal at all ages, but Wendy began to forget simple things. Appointments, names, the right words, landmarks that were once well known. A formal diagnosis confirmed the worst - Wendy had dementia. Her vast intellect was now under assualt from within, and Peter had to watch
Thrice in Love 289 helplessly as the woman he loved started to evaporate before his eyes. At first it was manageable, but the house at Waterfall Gully was isolated at the end of a long winding road. They agreed to move into an apartment at the top of Cross Road at Myrtle Bank, but Wendy never really accepted it as her home. She began to wander, trying desperately to find something familiar to her rapidly fading mind, sometimes ending up in other apartments, or in an unfamiliar corridor. Eventually Peter had to take the difficult step of moving her to a dedicated facility at Leabrook, where she could be cared for properly. Peter remains at Myrtle Bank, but continues to visit Wendy at her new home, although she daily becomes less and less of the formidable woman she once was. Peter remains wedded to his love of gardening on a purely voluntary basis, looking after the balcony gardens of fellow residents, and maintaining the community garden of the centre in which he lives.

Goldsborough seems more likely, given William’s mother’s maiden name. There is another stone on the site, but it is not engraved with “WGW” as one would expect, and the purpose of the current stone is unknown. 17 William’s retirement letter in March 1882 stated that he had worked for the company for ‘over a quarter of a century’, placing his start date prior to 1857. This coincides with his sale of the business in May 1856. 18 Whittam, William, Personal Diary, 5 Jan 1852. 19 Advertising, Adelaide Times, 23 May 1856, p4; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/207092272 20 Australia, Birth Index, 1788-1922; Sarah Goldsborough Whittam; Birth Date 29 May 1856; Birth Place Kensington; Page 330 Volume 5 21 Family Notices, Adelaide Observer, 13 Jun 1857, p5; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/158114179 22 Matthew Whittam (1853-1940) visited Settle in 1876 and at that time his Aunt Ellen was still living at The Green. There appears to have been some small-scale operation of the tannery at that time, with Matthew watching some men load bark into the tanning pits on one occasion, but declining an offer to assist on account of him wearing a white shirt. 23 William’s diary from late 1855 describes a number of fires in Grenfell St and Hindley St, and Anne did not sleep well after these occurred. In addition, the city was becoming increasingly busier and more populated, which would have added to the strain. 24 Original indenture of title held at the Government Records Office, Netley, SA, Transfer to Torrens Title Application No. 2280. Essentially, this means old age, and the attending doctor did not know, or could not be bothered finding out, the true cause of death. The death was registered by Thomas Buttery, Undertaker’s Assistant. The Butterys were prominent members of Clayton Congregational Church in later years. Source: SA Genealogical & Heraldry Society, Death certificate, District of Norwood, 9 Oct 1887. 50 Anne’s death certificate lists the cause of death as ‘Cancer of Stomach, Omentum’. The omentum is a fatty body in the lower abdomen, which can develop cancer as a secondary growth from ovarian cancer. Whether this was actually known by the doctor, or whether it was just a large growth in the lower abdomen, visible from outside, is unknown. It may have been bowel cancer or some other form of growth, but given the diagnosis, we are settling on ovarian cancer as the cause here. Firstly, Mary Magdalene O’Malley, whose child Gene O’Malley was born on 17 Mar 1917. This is also listed as Gene Best, which implies this was the father’s surname. Secondly, Katherine McCumber Dwyer, whose child Lorna Ann Dwyer was born on 23 Mar 1917. And lastly, Ruby May Duke, whose child Iris Ethel Duke was born on 24 Aug 1916. Arthur was worried for at least six weeks prior to his death, which is before the conception date of Gene O’Malley and Lorna Ann Dwyer. This leaves Iris Ethel Duke as the only possibility, assuming that the child was born in Blyth. In situations such as this, it was not uncommon for girls to be sent away to have an illegitimate child, in order to keep them out of the public eye. So, Iris may not be Arthur’s child at all. However, the timing is certainly plausible, and short of actual DNA evidence, it seems a fair assumption to make. Counting back from his death in July, this puts us in late May. He makes reference to ‘not having a testimonial from Mr Mitchell’ straight after saying he received a note from Harrold Brothers. It is assumed that this is James Mitchell, who worked at Harrold Brothers with William Whittam, and whose daughter Kate would later marry Matthew’s brother Joshua. 7 References to Florrie (Florence) are scattered through Matthew’s letters home, and he grants her a position of some importance in his thoughts. He never states her last name, except to refer to her family and parents – Mr & Mrs H. It appears she had two sisters, Maggie (Margaret) and Minnie (Mary, a small child). Maggie was well known to the Whittam family as well, and Matthew appears to have written to her from England. It also appears that Florrie hailed from Port Adelaide, as Matthew made reference to her ‘going out to Kensington’ to visit, and also wondered what ‘Portonians’ (residents of Port Adelaide) would think of his quarrel. 8 Whittam, Matthew, Letter to Sarah Whittam, 8 Dec 1876.. Given that the doctor knew the length of time she had the disease, it is clear she was first diagnosed back in 1912. It was only later that the severity of her illness would have increased. It is not clear how Ruth came by this land. Perroomba land was only sold off in 1911 & 1922 (prior to the larger subdivision of 1924). It is assumed that she simply had a job and bought it like everyone else. 13 The Acacias was built in 1875-7 by Dr J.M. Gunson to the design of Michael McMullen. It was then bought in 1878 and extended significantly by Sir Edwin Smith, successful brewer, politician and benefactor, and known as the ‘grand old man of Adelaide’. The property was subdivided and the home bought by Loreto College in 1920. https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/ B+3931 14 Now 343 Portrush Rd, Toorak Gardens, on the corner of Alexandra Ave. Certificate of Title Vol 868, Folio 104 15 Sinclair, Ian; Legacy Account, Mr Harold H Pittman; 25 July 2001 16 This is the date that Doug & Ken were discharged, which may not be the date they arrived home. Given that they were in their uniforms at the welcome home party, there is a possibility that they arrived a month or more earlier. This does seem likely, as Ruth was standing in the photo, and may have been too ill to do so when that close to her death. However, this is the only date we have, so I have persisted with it. 17 Advertiser; De Soto Makes First Appearance; 20 Oct 1953, p15 18 Who’s who in Adelaide, South Australia, 1921-22 p75; Associated Publishing Service, (1923?); viewed 2 Oct 2019; https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-30541013/view?partId=nla.obj- 30589870#page/n78/mode/1up 19 It is not until Ross’ Motor Bodies sold their premises in Gilbert St that it becomes obvious that is is owned by Arthur George Stanley Ross. Kath performed on the piano at this event, but it is most likely that all the musical performers were drawn from the cohort of students at the school. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5580695 20 The ‘Mr Boothby’ reference came from a personal account in the family, and at first glance it appears to refer to Mr Benjamin Boothby, the Supreme Court judge. The problem is that Benjamin Boothby died in 1868, some 27 years before Kath’s birth. However, a newspaper article referring to a picnic of the staff of the Law Courts lists both Kath and a Mr Hugo Boothby (1860-1953), who was an officer of the Supreme Court and a grandson of Benjamin. Alexandra Seager was the wife of Clarendon James Seager, who was descended from Lieutenant Edward Seager, who participated in the famous ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’. Lieutenant Seager, so legend goes, changed his name to stop his parents finding him in the army and making him come home. So, he is not really a Seager at all. The author is also not really a Seager, because his father, Duncan Seager, was born under the name Millikan, and adopted from a young age. 23 Ken wrote many letters to Kath during the war, which were destroyed by Kath in her 90’s during a fit of pique, as described later in the chapter. 24 State Library of South Australia, Roll of honour of the Fire Underwriters’ Association of South Australia, Ref PRG 280/1/21/209; https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/
314 Perroomba: A History of the Whittam Family in Australia PRG+280/1/21/209 25 There was a Whittam who played for Clayton in the 1920s, and it was only likely to be one of three - Os, Ted, or Ken. Doug & Don were both living in Ashbourne, and Os was a bit too quietly spoken and gentle to go for football. There is no knowledge of Ted playing anything other than tennis and cricket, which leaves Ken. Ken was the more boisterous and cheeky of the brothers, and it does seem more likely to see him mixing it with the best of them in the mud. The only incongruous piece is that Ken was not a great fan of the church, which makes it a little odd to find him playing for Clayton, but afterall, footy is footy. 26 Ken is listed as ‘Mr. R. Whittam’, but this is undoubtedly a typographical error. This is either an administrative error, since he was in Victoria for the majority of this year, or he was entered on the roll after submitting his vote for a referendum held on 28 October, perhaps when the Hororata stopped over in Fremantle on the way to Europe in late November. Os & Sylvia’s house appears to be at number 249 Portrush Road now. It is hard to tell, but based on the style of house and the location from the Sands & McDougall directory, the more austere 1940s houses near Percival St seem too recent. It is most likely that their house was the second bungalow north of Percival St.

Desiree’s grandmother, Georgianna Thomasina Clayton Poole (nee Desvignes), claimed that her grandfather was Count Hubert Desvignes of Paris and was beheaded along with King Louis XVI, even to the point of having this placed on her gravestone in West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide. The full story is probably the subject of a small book in its own right, but it seems that Georgianna was told this story when she was very young, possibly as a cover of respectability for the fact her parents had previously gone bankrupt and they had to flee their home in embarrassment, rather than regal pride. There were few to sispute her story, and it persisted after her death. Either way, the family certainly has French blood, and there are upper or upper-middle class roots, but the royal line may be a fabrication. 12 Our School - History, Trinity Gardens School, http://www.trinitygps.sa.edu.au/ourschool.php?id=16 13 Miss Angelita Davis’s Concert, Register, 7 Nov 1919, p8; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63116775 14 Announcements – Clayton Congregational Church, Register, 26 May 1923, p14; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/64122400 15 Sunday Services – Clayton, Advertiser, 21 May 1938, p8; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/74387497 16 Sunday Services – Clayton, Advertiser, 26 Oct 1940, p7; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/74464822 17 Sunday Services – Clayton, Advertiser, 28 Oct 1939, p8; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/49822476 18 Congregational Union of South Australia: Clayton Congregational Church, Young Ladies Class roll book 1919-1921; State Library of South Australia reference SRG 95/165/10/1 19 United Church Association, Mail, 17 Feb 1923, p6; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63779120 20 United Church Association – West Hindmarsh Methodist v Clayton, Mail, 2 Dec 1922, p6; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63773687 21 Mail, United Church Association –Clayton Congregational v Mile-End Church of Christ, 21 Mar 1925, p5; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/59711455 22 Coming-of-Age Party, Register, 28 Jun 1924, p14; https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/57383178 23 The property was owned by Hubert Henry Donovan Page.
