Our universities are tasked to provide a holistic education to our students by Sports, and indeed sporting activities blending extra curricula activities with the teach students many important life academic activities of our students, to lessons. They learn discipline, focus, help them come out as better versions of dedication, hard work, commitment and themselves. Hence, I have always believed teamwork. It is equally our responsibility that extra curricula activities should be an as universities to value sportsmanship indispensable part of every student’s life and reward courageous and energetic especially during their early academic life. students who willingly participate in these sporting activities and give off their best. Sports instils many values that help students to navigate life with honesty and responsibility for themselves and others. It also allows students to be agile and fit which only increases their concentration during academic work and increases the desire and willingness to work hard to be the best they can in any field. When students (and indeed all of us) participate in sports, serotonin and other chemicals in the brain are released and as a result of this exertion, we feel more rejuvenated every day. This helps us to stay fit and to have a healthy and positive lifestyle. Sports also plays a very important role in attaining and sustaining a stable and healthy mental health. Mental health should not be taken lightly. To have a holistic, healthy and meaningful life, students should also take care of their mental health. It plays a vital role in keeping them happy and focused. By physically playing various kinds of sports, people will also realize that they can focus and concentrate better in class. 24 27TH GUSA GAMES, KNUST 2022

Goodwill message from Prof. Mawutor Avoke Vice-Chancellor, University of Education, Winneba I wish to congratulate all the gallant athletes and sports fans on the occasion of the 27th GUSA games. For several years, the GUSA games have been held without any interruption until recently the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the suspension of the games. The GUSA Games are here with us again, and we can only be grateful to God. We relish the varied opportunities provided by the games for all students and officials to fraternize and network. As we participate in this year’s games, it is my prayer and hopes that the competition will take place in an atmosphere of love, respect, fair play and friendliness. Let me congratulate the host institution, KNUST for graciously accepting to host this year’s games. I expect that all the participating universities will record some progressive gains in this year’s competition. May the good Lord grant us favourable weather during the entire period of the games and bless us with the needed strength and vivacity to end the games successfully in a grand style. Long live GUSA, Long live Ghana, Thank you and God bless us all! 27TH GUSA GAMES, KNUST 2022 29

Goodwill message from Prof. Seidu Al-hassan Vice-Chancellor, University for Development Studies The theme also underscores the need to progressively exploit advances in science and technology to engender transparency and fairness in sporting activities. This, in my view, will enhance the potential of the GUSA games as a point for national cohesion, by promoting the spirit of sportsmanship, love and unity among students, while building bridges of friendship across Universities in Ghana. To the Sports Directors, Chairmen, Coaches and the athletes, I entreat you to demonstrate high level of maturity in handling victory or defeat, in order to ensure the success of the GUSA games. I wish all the participants and the KNUST a successful competition. With great delight, I send you warm Long Live GUSA! Long Live Ghana!! felicitations from the University for Development Studies (UDS) on the occasion of the 27th GUSA games, being hosted by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), from November 4, 2022 to November 19, 2022. Indeed, the theme for the 2022 GUSA games, which is ‘Harnessing Sporting Talents of Students for National Development through Healthy Competition, using Science and Technology’ is very apt. It recognises the fact that universities have increasingly become the hub for nurturing many and diverse talents, including sportsmen and women, for national development. Certainly, just like teachers, doctors and engineers, sports superstars can equally be groomed from universities. 30 27TH GUSA GAMES, KNUST 2022

Let us prioritize the needs of our sports Directorates and Units as their successes enhance our standings in the crowded marketplace of continental and global tertiary education. 27TH GUSA GAMES, KNUST 2022 35

I wish to encourage all participating teams by borrowing and paraphrasing the words of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 3:14: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, you must press on toward the goal to win the prize for which you have come to compete. The opportunity to don the colours of your university should be enough inspiration to do well and I implore you to take full advantage of that opportunity to give off your best. In your individual events, please endeavour to exhibit the spirit of true sportsmanship because, as it is said, trophies are ephemeral but memories last forever. Compete in fairness so that the memories can last forever! Thank you. 36 27TH GUSA GAMES, KNUST 2022
