Local BusinessHave you actively worked with businesses, similarto those you have described, to encourage theemployment of local workers? My door has always been open to my constituents, to local business and topeople who want to be a part of our local economy. It has been my job, alongwith the local council and the government, to try and find ways to enable localbusinesses to grow and be more successful, whilst keeping all of theopportunities that goes with that employment within my constituency. Not so long ago I visited ‘Dymag’, a performance racing wheel manufacture, and I was really impressed with their commitment to providing opportunities for the next generation. They work closely with the ‘Future Brunel’s Programme’ in order to encourage young people to go into engineering, both girls and boys. That type of commitment is something I really want to encourage and celebrate within the local business community. In that regard, it is great to see that Wiltshire College isundergoing a major expansion and I understand that youplayed a large part in securing the funding. What benefitsdo you feel this will bring to the community?Under the last government the learning and skills council had a capital programme forredeveloping further education colleges, yet it was out of control and wildly overspent.Colleges that had bid for projects, like Wiltshire College, had their hopes dashed. I knew, as anew MP, that this was unfinished business and Wiltshire College was still in desperate need ofinvestment. I promised to go to the very top, if needs be, to try and secure the money that wasneeded for the project. In a question that I put directly to the Prime-Minister himself, I made abrazen bid for over £20 million to be invested in Chippenham, in order to provide a state of theart educational facility for the college. I am delighted to say that we were successful and duringthe course of last year I’ve been able to celebrate with the college as they continue to makegreat progress on their journey to having this new building. This investment means Wiltshire College can continue to be a great facility for young people, especially those who don’t end up at university, to complete their formal education. It will nowbe able to support even more apprentices and provide a way for young people to develop theirskills and lay the foundation for what should be successful careers. How do you see this development benefiting local business?Even until a few years ago, when the country was still working its way out of the recession, whenever I met with businesses I was struck by how they told me how hard it was to findpeople with the skills that they needed to grow. If we want businesses that are successful, weneed to make sure they can access a skilled pool of labour and the new college developmentwill play a crucial part in this endeavour. I aftnonline.com 13
