Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL (MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS) As a junior in high school, I can definitely say that the last - Arushi Kashyap few years have been quite challenging. We all have this 11th Grade looming presence of thinking about college applications South Brunswick High School as soon as we start 9th grade. With the college admission process becoming more and more complex, it is important fundraising, so I interviewed to be on class council and to do something unique to make you stand out to got on there. As a person without a lot of athletic admission officers. That’s a huge burden for a highschooler background, I am terrible at sports. But if you have an to constantly think about. interest in sports, that should definitely be a thing you can I remember when I first started high school, I was try in high school. You just have to remember that high absolutely lost with everything. There were a billion things school shouldn’t be a pure academic place. It should be a we had to do for school as our workload doubled the place where you can cultivate your interests and try new amount we got in middle school. On top of that, my dad things because you have all of college to focus more on wanted me to do like 15 clubs?! That seemed your potential career. unfathomable. I remember how my dad would round up all Having some kind of board position really gives you the of the seniors and college kids from my neighborhood to maximum benefit of being in a club. It looks great on your sit down and talk to me about my four year plan, transcript and it teaches you a lot that you can apply extracurriculars, and SAT studying. As stubborn as I was, I everywhere. I’m in 11th grade right now and I ended up always looked at this with irritation. I’m literally in 9th getting board positions in 4 out of the 5 clubs/activities grade! I don’t need to be thinking about this right now, I I’m in. To give context, I got vice president of fundraising thought. in my environmental club, secretary in that baking club, I know how daunting this may seem, but honestly, thinking and 2 executive member positions in class council and a about it from the start helped me in the long run. After club called Girls Who Code. I wouldn’t have imagined talking to a bunch of my seniors, I really gained a deeper getting those positions when I was in 9th or 10th grade understanding of most of the aspects about high school because of my skills back then. I feel that over the last two and what’s really important. I appreciate my dad for giving years, I really cultivated and enhanced my networking me all of these opportunities. At first, it felt like he was skills. You start to speak more, form connections with new saying “you have to do this club” or “you have to take this people, and overall develop your work ethic, too. I class” but in reality, he was saying “you can do this club” improved my confidence when I was in those clubs and and “you can take this class”. He was giving me the learned to come out of my shell. It taught me leadership resources and advice at my disposal and it was my skills that allowed me to interview and get the positions I responsibility to utilize it in my way. have. In addition to generally good grades and scores, Another thing that you can maybe think about is having extracurriculars are also very significant in one’s high what some call a “passion project”. This is basically some school experience. In 9th grade, I used that year as an type of work that you feel greatly about. For example, in experimenting year where I tried out different types of 9th grade, my friend and I came up with a campaign to clubs ranging from medical, business, and fun clubs. I reduce single use plastic bags in the community because learned what I liked and did not like that year. For we both felt strongly about plastic waste. Over the next 3 example, one of the seniors said that Model UN was a years, we’ve developed our campaign Say No to Plastic great club and it looks great on your transcript. I tried that Bags by creating a website, getting sponsors, creating in 9th grade, and I ended up really disliking the club. That’s bags, and holding events. Our mission is to distribute just me. I know many others that decided to stick with that reusable bags and to educate the community so we can club because they genuinely liked it. I’m just saying, don’t keep our homes green. This whole process was a learning feel obligated to stay with a club if you don’t enjoy it. By experience for us as we learned how to communicate and the middle of 9th grade, all of a sudden, my dad told me lead effectively. We identified many businesses that could to join this entrepreneurship club he heard was really good potentially donate, created emails, and formed a line of called XSTEM, but it was too late in the year. In 10th communication with them. We also learned how to grade, I joined just to check it out and I ended up really distribute these donated bags by contacting venues and liking it. I made many connections and won a few having a drive. I feel that our passion project is quite competitions for a product my team and I created. This successful and I actually enjoy doing work like this as I am club gave me both a “college admission” advantage with still taking part in this campaign. If you have an interest in the competitions/awards we won and a personal doing or developing something, you should definitely satisfaction as I had a lot of fun there. consider planning it out and actually executing it. Adding on to that, it is important that your extracurriculars If you have any questions or need any help with anything I aren’t just strictly academic / career oriented clubs. Take talked about here or any other general things, I am here to things that you actually love to do. Other than the 2 help (you can email [email protected])! I know first career oriented clubs, I’m in an environmental club, a hand how overwhelming school can be and I want to share baking club, and class council. I feel that it really balances my experiences and advice that I’ve received from my own the already hard academic classes I have in school with my seniors and what I’ve learned to help you in your high passions and interests. Like, I have a passion for the school experience. Remember that we have a huge environment and I love baking, so I joined those clubs community here at BJANA and you can always approach relating to that. I also enjoy organizing and anyone with any questions you have. Vaishali - Diwali Special Edition 2021 Page - 72
