Kidzcan Quarterly: Volume1 Kidzcan Will This Year Hold A National Cancer Comprehensive Training Conference Kidzcan will this year hold a National Cancer Comprehensive Training Conference over 4 days in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. The proposed national cancer training takes place in November 2015 in Harare and the sensitisation process has already begun preparing health personnel to participate. It is a welcome program as there is as a notable gap in paediatric cancer management in the country. Most resources are directed at adult cancers and health personnel are now at a loss on how to approach children. The training is targeting all health care workers in government or non-governmental institutions as well as volunteers. Stakeholders will also be given an opportunity to air their views on how they can best contribute to stem the tide of this non-communicable disease. Many thanks to Old Mutual who contributed significantly to enable this event. Be there or be square. ZIMBABWE CHILDREN’S CANCER RELIEF Kidzcan is involved in early detection campaigns at district and provincial level to promote early treatment of 3 childhood cancers in solidarity with the Ministry of Health and Child Care. The campaigns, aim at sensitising health care professionals in detecting signs and symptoms of childhood cancers, following the referral system as well as palliative care. Paediatric palliative care is still a challenge as children hardly ever verbalise pain or discomfort so pain management and good communication skills are emphasised. The latest outreach was done in 4 Rural Health Centres of Shamva District from 6-9 October 2015 and the next workshop is in Centenary from 26-30 October 2015 National Cancer Comprehensive Training • Strategy Launch

OLD MUTUAL DONATES $25,000 TO KIDZCAN HARARE – Local integrated financial services group, Old Mutual Zimbabwe, on Thursday provided a timely boost to children suffering from cancer when it donated $25,000 to Kidzcan. Kidzcan is an organisation that is dedicated to increasing the survival rate of children with cancer in a loving and caring environment. Unveiling the donation at Mutual Gardens, the group's head office, in Harare Old Mutual Zimbabwe Group Chief Executive, Jonas Mushosho, said the field of health delivery was of particular interest to his organisation. “We are particularly interested in alleviating the plight of the disadvantaged in society, particularly children and women. In all our programmes, we work with like-minded organisations in our pursuit of creating a better tomorrow for all,” said Mushosho. “Today we are joining hands with one such partner, Kidzcan, by donating $25,000 towards the upkeep of children suffering from cancer. Kidzcan envisions a compassionate world where children with cancer are given the chance to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. “The incidence of cancer among Zimbabwean children is very real. It is time society appreciated the magnitude of this problem to enable a collective effort towards addressing it,” said the Old Mutual Group CEO. Global statistics indicate that every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer somewhere in the world. An estimated 250,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with one of 16 forms of childhood cancer – cancers that are uniquely different from adult cancers. 5 National Cancer Comprehensive Training • Strategy Launch

An absence of childhood cancer registries in the majority of countries around the world has led researchers to the conclusion that this number is highly underestimated and that countless other children/adolescents with cancer remain unreported and unaccounted for. Mushosho said Old Mutual's donation signified the group's recognition of the increasing incidence of cancer among children in Zimbabwe. He highlighted some of the group's projects in support of health delivery service in Zimbabwe. “We recently completed the construction of two blocks that will provide health services personnel with decent accommodation at Chingwizi Clinic, which is situated at Nuanetsi Ranch. “Old Mutual is working in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to help reduce the high incidence of infant mortality that is prevalent in marginalised areas. “This initiative, which targets rural clinics countrywide, involves installation of boreholes, water tanks and geysers and solar power at rural health service centres in each of the country's provinces. So far this has been done at seven clinics in various provinces.” In addition, Old Mutual installed boreholes at three district hospitals – Gwanda and Maphisa, in Matabeleland South and Tsholotsho, in Matabeleland North. WORKSHOP REPORT The Ministry of Health and Child Care in partnership with KidzCan Zimbabwe launched a historic platform for dialogue on paediatric cancer management and support from the 7th to the 9th of December 2015. This workshop brought together health professionals, key experts on cancer epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and care as well as health governance agencies represented at the highest level. Sessions were held at Mandel training centre. Each province was requested to identify prospective trainees (Doctor x 1 and Nurses x 2) and each central hospital identify 1 nurse and 1 doctor for the above indicated training. With over 40 attendees, there was representation from all provinces except for Masvingo. The Guest of Honour was the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, The Honourable Adriin Musiiwa. KidzCan would like to extend its appreciation to Delta Corporation for sponsoring this event. Promotion of healthier lifestyles and early detection is vital in the fight against cancer as in our resource constrained Zimbabwe prevention mitigates the economic liability of treatment costs. In addition cancer services need to be adapted and engaged in improving the quality of life for those living with cancer as this mitigates risk factors of cancer. It is the mandate of the MoHCC to support children in their right to healthcare which also enables them to enjoy other rights such as education etc. KidzCan Zimbabwe complements and contributes to this agenda through its services to paediatric cancer patients in primary healthcare institutions, awareness raising of childhood cancers to promote early detection and advocacy for children's health rights. The joint cancer management and support training workshop reflects these goals and ties in Workshop ties in with the 2030 national agenda. It is seen as an initial step towards ongoing collaborative and coordinated efforts in increasing knowledge of services available and improving the quality of and accessibility of care. 57 National Cancer Comprehensive Training • Strategy Launch
