SUNDAY APRIL 23 Abandon plans for Sunday service at St. Paul’s. Sleep again after breakfast. First trip on the tube. Selfridges to buy umbrella. Walk down Bond Street to D.R. Harris (closed.) London marathon underway. Hatchards Books. Fortnum & Mason. Piccadilly Circus. Sunday roast dinner.

MONDAY APRIL 24 Light breakfast. Nap before noon start. Walk along Embankment to Courtauld Gallery. First view of Thames. Cleopatra’s Needle. First view of Impressionists. Trafalgar Square. D.R. Harris. Long walk in rain to tube.



TUESDAY APRIL 25 Progress—no nap after breakfast! Ordered London walks book from Waterstones. Walk around Marylebone. Unexpected noon mass at St. James Spanish Place Catholic Church.The Wallace Collection for dog portraiture exhibition. Bought exhibition catalogue. Long walk back to hotel through Hyde Park. Marble Arch. Speakers Corner. Italian Gardens.



WEDNESDAY APRIL 26 Nap after breakfast. Late start to Kenwood House. Vermeer. In room alone for long time. Leather armchair. Need to return.
