This was an initiativeto collect donations for the American Heart Association and anopportunity to disseminate relevant information on heart health. The JRMC sta received a bracelet or a keychain in return for theirgenerous nancial contribution. More importantly, this was anactionable way to lend support to the AHA’s mission to “fosterappropriate cardiac care to reduce disability and deathscaused by cardiovascular disease and stroke.” Additionally, on February 23rd, JRMC and HolaDoctor hosted aFacebook Live event for National Wear Red Day. Dr. Johanna Contreras began by explaining that the national campaign,Go Red, is to bring awareness to cardiovascular disease in women. The panelists discussed the symptoms of heartattacks in women and how they may di er from those that men experience. Hispanic/Latina women are at a higher riskof heart attacks due to pre-existing conditions that are prevalent in the Latino community such as diabetes, high bloodpressure, and high cholesterol. A survivor, Bernilda Quinones, shared her experience of having a stroke and how shewishes she had known then, what she knows now. She experienced gastrointestinal pain; felt fatigued, and ultimatelyhad trouble breathing which led to her losing consciousness and being rushed to the hospital.Dr. Contreras and Ms. Quinones explained that unfortunately, many women do not seek help orkeep up with their annual checkups. This is a consequence stemming from fears concerningimmigration status, lack of insurance and high health care costs. Furthermore, many are afraid toask for time o from work/responsibilities, worried about the care of their children, and taxedwith a multitude of other complicating factors.
