“Not Waving but Drowning” By: Stevie Smith

Poem text paraphrase stanza 1:the man is not being heard Nobody heard him, the dead man, stanza 2: the man loved to be happy, but it got too cold But still he lay moaning: for his heart. I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning. stanza 3: the dead man had been to far out all his life. Poor chap, he always loved larking And now he’s dead It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way, They said. Oh, no no no, it was too cold always (Still the dead one lay moaning) I was much too far out all my life And not waving but drowning.

Connotation repetition- repeats “he lay moaning” metaphor- I was much too far out all my life rhyme scheme - the second line and last line always rhyme , the first and third don’t alliteration- “oh no,no,no” consonance-” him, his heart” imagery- Still the dead one lay moaning foreshadow- “but still he lay moaning” symbolism- “Not waving but drowning”

Attitude Attitude 1: He’s talking in first person, making you believe he’s talking about someone. Shift: “ I was much further out than you thought” he switches from talking in 3rd person to talking in 1st person Attitude 2: He’s talking in first person, you finally realize he’s talking about himself

Theme My interpretation of the theme of the poem was sometimes people appear to be “waving”, but in reality are “drowning”, calling out for help.

Poem #2 “The Ocean” by: Sally H. I'm just swimming in my ocean of fears Heading towards the deep end, I never thought it would go so far. I'm lost in my ocean I don't want to be here anymore. Why is it that my ocean is so full and rapid? Why me? Why aren't all the rocks and dirt banned? If they weren't here, I wouldn't need to swim anymore.

Poem #2 continued But know, the water is freezing. There is something sending me deeper and deeper. Somewhere I feared it would never go. Someplace that I knew was always there, but would never affect me. Fish whispering, they know I don't belong here. They take one look at me and think I'm lost, I'm in the wrong place. But it's true. I am lost. Trying to scream but I'm too far down in the ocean for anyone to hear me, There's some type of power forcing me,

Poem #2 continued. The type of power that should be illegal. I'm just staring, I can't do anything else. I can tell my ocean stopped providing water, But it's never going to evaporate. How can the water evaporate when the problem will never come right back up? Nothing's going to change...I'm paralyzed, I can't even blink, and all I'm thinking is Why me?

Theme of “The Ocean” The theme is, don’t swim too deep into your emotions before you trap yourself, and you’re too deep for anyone to hear you, or help you.

Connection I chose this second poem because, both authors are trapped in the “ocean” of their emotions, life, and what’s happening in their life. They have traveled to far and depp for anyone to help them, or even hear them anymore.
