FACTORS AFFECTING GLOBAL SUICIDE RATE How do GDP, place, age and gender, generation and other contributing factors affect suicide rate? INTRODUCTION Mental health is an increasing concern in the world today. People who can't get through life or just easily give up on it may make an easy but irrational decision just to end their own life. Over time, we have seen a surge then dip in the global suicide rate which may be due to a variety of reasons. Though it’s virtually impossible to capture the emotional aspects of human’s lives in an overall scale, we can however look at other external factors that may affect suicide rate. We will dive deeper into the external factors which could be correlated with suicide rates across the globe. HOW DOES GDP AFFECT SUICIDE? One of the main external factors which is correlated with suicide rate is the GDP of the country in which the person resides. From the scatter plot, we can see that as GDP of a country is higher, the overall rated happiness score is also high. Furthermore, leading to the line plot, we can clearly see the suicide rate peaking when the GDP is at its lowest and vice versa.

DIGGING DEEPER…. AGE, GENDER AND GENERATION AS FACTORS SUICIDE NUMBER vs. SEX BY AGE AND GENDER The next factor which may have a correlation with suicide rate is the age and gender of the person. From the bar chart, we can see that Males aged between 35-54 years had the highest recorded suicide rate, and it was the same for Females. SUICIDE NUMBER vs. GENRATION In addition, from the box plot, we can see that the Boomers generation (born 1946-1964) had the highest average suicide rate. This could be because of mental, physical and emotional concerns that increase with age. The lowest suicide number is for Generation Z (born 1997-2012). This could be attributed to the fact that they’re young, motivated people that strive to make a name for themselves in life.

DIGGING DEEPER…BY REGION AND PLACE From the geographical map, we can see the distribution of The bar plot above represents the suicides/100k vs. the suicides throughout the world. We can clearly see that the country. It is seen that the number of suicides has been Russian Federation and USA recorded the most suicides in increasing with every passing year for all the mentioned the years between 1985 and 2015. countries. This can be due to increased stress due to the ever-growing competition for jobs, heavy workload, increasing health problems amongst other things. CONCLUSION: From the analyses performed, we were able to identify some factors that seemed to be correlated with the global suicide rate. In specific we can see that, There seems to be a slight positive correlation between the suicide rate and GDP of the country. It is observed that as the GDP increases, the happiness score also increases thereby decreasing the number of suicides. There also seems to be the highest suicide rate amongst people of age 35-54 years which can attributed to the increased stress faced during those years, be it workload, running a family, financial problems or health concerns. In addition, Boomers are the generation in which the most suicides were recorded and Generation Z, the least. Finally, we can see the locations in the world which recorded the most suicides (Russia/USA). It has also been observed that with every passing year, the number of suicides increased. This could be contributed to the stress caused due to the ever-growing competition in the work field and poor relationships with family and friends, questionable lifestyle choices leading to health concerns amongst other possible reasons. Although emotional factors in a human account for much higher correlation, this analysis shows the effect that other external factors may have for suicides around the world.
