MATHS FIESTA 2020- CELEBRATION OF WORLD MATHS DAY Mathematics is the cradle of all creations, without which a world cannot move an inch. Be it a cook or a farmer, a carpenter or a mechanic, a shopkeeper or a doctor, an engineer or a scientist, a musician or a magician, everyone needs mathematics in their day to day life. Experience says learning Mathematics can be made easier and enjoyable if the curriculum includes mathematical activities and its real-life application. In this regard, the Department of Mathematics (Middle school) organises Maths Fiesta each year to facilitate mathematical growth and to deepen the level of knowledge and understanding amongst learners. This year fiesta was organized from 13th-15th October 2020, the activities were designed to empower teaching, maximize learning, build student confidence, and ensure maths is viewed more positively through the eyes of both the teacher and the student. Importance was given to the need to ensure maths is not represented as a stand-alone subject. It is vital that students make real-world connections with concepts and understand why these mathematical skills can assist them at school, beyond the classroom, and throughout their future. This year it was planned as a combination of interdisciplinary activities which clearly defines its utility and links with the other subjects. Further, they were assessed as subject enrichment activities to acknowledge the student’s efforts. There were a plethora of activities and each focused on the integration of two subjects together, starting from Languages to Science, extending to Social Science as well as Music and Arts. The culmination of the Maths Fiesta competitions was done through a morning assembly on 15th October 2020 which included the celebration of ‘World Maths Day’ and ‘Global Hand Washing Day’. The assembly was a big event with myriad performances starting from mathematical poem recitation to song based on mean, median, and the mode in Hindi to “श्लोकाउचारण” in Sanskrit. The glimpses of each competition of the classes VI-VIII was shown through the videos with a beautiful description of them. The main highlight of the assembly was the special talk by a guest speaker Dr. Shipra on ‘Maintaining Good Health & Hygiene’. For the second day the activity named ‘Perfect Blend: Mind & Heart Competition’ (Combination of Mathematics & English), which focussed on ‘Diary Entry Writing’ by the students to share their feelings and reflections on the Mathematicians and Vedic maths after watching few videos For the final day the mathematics was merged with Science and the activity was titled as ‘Numbers in My Body’, it was a group activity in which the young learner were asked to explore Mathematics in Joints/Bones of Human body and present their collaborative efforts through a Power Point Presentation. For Class VII, the first day activity was ‘Geometry N Goodness Competition’ in which students wrote a pledge for Goodness and bordered the sheet amazingly using Warli Painting showcasing the amalgamation of Arts, Mathematics & English. Second day, the abstract Mathematics was merged with Hindi and the activity was named as ‘गणणत आधाररत मुहावरे ’ in which the students explored Maths in the language and came up with plenty of innovative stories. On the third day, the students were sensitized about conservation of water, where the students did analysis of ‘Total Water Consumption of a Family in a Week’ on ‘Global Hand Washing Day’ (October15) and attempted a quiz to test their gained knowledge and understanding. In Class VIII, the activity was designed to state preventive measures to be taken during this pandemic under the name ‘Roadmap to Corona Awareness’. It was a Poster Making Competition on ‘World Calamity Control Day’. Students also did comparative Study of death rate & recovery rate of Corona patients in Delhi. Hence this activity proved to be the beautiful combination of Mathematics with Science.

Moving ahead to day 2 the Mathematics blended with languages like Sanskrit and German, students wrote meaningful slogans in German and used their artistic skills in constructing a Vedic Clock in Sanskrit. On the final day, the students were tested on the ‘Importance and right steps for washing hands’ through a worksheet in Hindi. The students surprised us by categorizing and presenting English Idioms related to Mathematics. All the activities were thoroughly enjoyed by the students of class VI - VIII and they worked with full heart and zeal and came up with commendable outputs. Each competition is judged by the teachers of the concerned department and E- certificates were given to winners for their marvellous work.

CLIMATE REALITY: MY RESPONSIBILITY Having received the best of training from none other than the father of Climate Reality Project, Mr. Al Gore, 10th of October was a red letter day in my calendar when we had to contribute to the world wide campaign for saving our climate. My mentors, Dr Ashok Pandey who had led me on this path and Ms. Rekha who hand held us every day of our 6 day training, motivated us all to take up presentations on the occasion of 24 Hours of Climate Reality. Being the Headmistress I wished to inspire my young students who had begun tasting the joy of working for the SDGs and were very dedicated to the cause of Climate Action, SDG13. In order to make the presentation more child friendly, I added 10 slides to the master presentation sent to us for the day. These slides listed the actions children can take and change their lifestyle to bring the desired change. So, I organised 3 sessions of 40 minutes each for 6th, 7th and 8th. Forty minutes is the attention span of children. Their parents were so fascinated to know about the 24 Hours of Climate Reality that they sat along with their wards to attend the same .The Social Media creative was posted on Twitter and a Feedback form was created too. The sessions went off very smoothly which were conducted on the MS TEAMS.I am adept at taking training sessions and weaving the magic with the help of Al Gore's presentation, it was easy and doable. I kept posting the links and invites in our group created by Ms. Rekha and some of the co travellers of Climate Reality, did visit my sessions and gave a feedback too. This is the essence of real education and if we, as educators are able to kindle the spark in the hearts of our Global citizens then our work will earn its worth, and Climate Reality will write stories of success. The feedback received poured generous appreciation for the project and my young students shared their thoughts and views which spoke volumes about their zeal and enthusiasm. I pray to the Almighty that this project achieves what it has set out to. We can and we will, make the world a better place and our earth will be the same glowing Blue Marble as the skies perceive it to be. By- Ms. Sunita Rajiv

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY ON DUSSEHRA The term Dussehra is made up of two words, Dasha means ten, and Hara means defeat. This festival is also known as Vijaydashmi. Different parts of the country celebrate this festival in different styles, to mark Lord Ram’s win over Ravana. Students can be significantly influenced by the life lessons they can learn from a well-run assembly. To celebrate this festival, students of class VII D got the privilege to conduct a special assembly on ‘Dussehra’, to inspire everyone to follow the path of dharma (righteousness) and truth. Durga Stuti was chanted by the devotees to invoke the blessing of Goddess Durga. The assembly began with Durga Stuti, wherein students presented shlokas and all the Nine Goddesses were showcased. It was followed by a self-composed poem by Saanchi Gupta signifying that in the end truth always wins. Symbolizing the importance of Dussehra as a ‘Victory of good over evil’; Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Ashvina (September-October). It is the seventh month of the Hindu calendar, with the appearance of the full moon that is also called the ‘Bright Fortnight’ (Shukla paksha). Students presented an animated video designed and them, wherein they showcased the importance of this festival. The Program was further followed by a melodious song by Lakshay Saxena. Unknown facts about Dussehra by Anirudh and Kanu Supriya left the audience spellbound. They were amazed by varied ways to celebrate Dussehra all over the world. As we all are aware, that Dussehra also celebrates the beginning of Durga Pooja, a nine-day feast to worship Goddess Durga and remember her win over Mahishasur’s monster. Students showcased a beautiful dance depicting the power of Goddess Durga, which was appreciated by all. Our special guest parent Ms. Mona Gupta gave her valuable time to share some useful facts and lessons which can we learn and imbibe from this festival. SCIENCE SESSION BY PRINCIPAL SIR “Science is a way of thinking, much more that it is a body of knowledge.” On 17th October 2020, an enriching session was taken by our Principal Mr. Sanjay Yadav for class VIII students where he enlightened them about the broader meaning of Science. The session was attended by HM (Middle Section) Ms. Sunita Rajiv, Science teachers and few other teachers from middle section teachers as well. The thoughts shared were beyond just Physics and Science, but about how the living world works. He explained beautifully how when humans behave differently in different situations, they are labelled as ‘Dual-faced’ which is considered as a negative trait. Whereas in Science, unknown facts and answers are conveniently given the name ‘Dual nature’ and that’s how we accept and study them. The topics of discussion ranged from ‘String theory’ to very basic life processes. He discussed that even though all the greatest scientists have all the necessary information about the famous E=mc2 , the equation given by Einstein that expresses the equivalence of mass and energy, still why is it that we are unable to apply this to maximize the energy of every object or entity on earth? The answer was very beautifully explained that is it probably because the energy is spread in all directions. Physic and Chemistry was also explained by a simple analogy of physical and chemical nature of humans. Physical nature refers to the aspect of appearance, whereas chemical nature refers to the thoughts, personality and behaviour. The students were also sensitized about the judicious use of resources and technology. He explained how when the ‘need’ converts into ‘greed’, it can destroy the mankind. Science is a process that takes us from confusion to understanding in a manner that’s precise, predictive and reliable. All the students and the teachers felt extremely grateful and empowered after the wonderful interaction with our Principal.

Where There is a Will There is a Way This proverb ‘Where there is a will there is a way’ is used to inspire people. It means that victory depends upon our fortitude to work. As said that handwork leads to success, and patience pays off. We can look at Mahatma Gandhi’s success in driving away the British from India. It shows us how he set his mind to free India and accomplished it as well. This serves as an inordinate real life example of where there is a will there is away. This proverb carries great meaning. It serves as a great saying in helping people achieve their goals. Thus, it is very important for the people to use it to push their limits. Most of the people fail due to lack of determination and patience. Everything takes time, even success. But, remember that success is not a standout factor alone. You can then seek out new paths and discover what’s right for you. But if you don’t fail, you might never consider pursuing different avenues. You’d just continue on down the wrong path. I would like to end this essay with a quote- \"Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.\" By- Anushka VIII-F WHEN THE NATION WAS LOCKED WHEN THE TRANSPORTATION WAS BLOCKED, WHEN THE STREETS WERE QUIET, AND NOTHING WAS RIGHT. WHEN THE WORLD WAS GETTING WOUNDED, AND EVERY LIFE WAS NOW COUNTED, WITH THE TIME ON THE CLOCK TICKING, HOW ARE WE GOING TO SAVE THIS LIVING? DEATH AND SPREADING ALL AROUND, NOW NOT A SINGLE SOOTHING SOUND, JUST WORKING OUT DAY AND NIGHT, TO MAKE THE SITUATION STABLE AND RIGHT. FOR ALL THE FOLKS WITH DAILY LIVES, WHO ARE THE LAMP AGAINST THE DARKNESS? OFFERED MUCH WITH ONE DAY HOPE, WITH A HUGE VISION FOR THE WORLD TO COPE. TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM THIS SCARY HAZARD, THEY THEMSELVES VENTURED INTO DEADLY BLIZZARD, NOT GIVING A SECOND THROUGH OUT THEIR LIFE, PUTTING THEMSELVES AT THE TIP OF KNIFE. THANK YOU FOR SHEILDING THE NATION, WITH ABSOLUTE EFFORT AND DEDICATION. BY- MANSVANI PANDEY VIIID

Defeat the Devil The story of Dussehra is full of bravery, A tale of evil defeated cleverly. Lord Ram killed Ravana and his greed, And from his rule, the earth was freed. Now it is time to free our society, From the social devils eating the roots in variety. Like poverty, racism and corruption, Which are only leading to our destruction. So we should all join hands together and be brave, To remove the misery they gave. We should all act like Lord Ram of Ayodhya, And kill these Ravanas for their karma. Poem on Earth Earth is our motherland, We are destroying it on the other hand. Billions of trees are destroyed, These are some things to avoid. We have to at the earliest realize, Before nature raises its voice, And the Earth will not look nice. Cutting Trees, Will spoil nature’s peace. Don't waste water, Or there will be an emergency matter, We should act now to save our future. By Aviral Verma VIID
