TIPS ON HOW TO TEACH DURING AND AFTER COVID-19 By Victor Sisa Okunga Like any other profession, education has been evolving from a teacher-centered to a learner- centered approach to learning. However, the inception of the global pandemic halted this voyage. The disappearance of the thrill that initially came along with the mentioned transformation process means that teachers must devise mechanisms to remain relevant even as they struggle to keep in contact with the learners in this time of the global pandemic. It is possible that the ability to learn and practice both the hard and soft skills will enhance the teacher's capacity to promote a safe learning process that leads to achieving the desired outcomes. Tech-savvy Being tech-savvy is one of the relevant skills teachers need to practice in the current and post- covid era. This skill entails the ability to stay abreast of ways of using modern technology to enhance learning. Teachers seeking to be tech-savvy should be committed to know and use different technological tools that support learning. Such includes zoom, WhatsApp, Google meeting, among others. Using these platforms to pass information to the learners at school or even in their respective homes creates room for teachers and learners to have a meaningful interaction that can yield positive learning outcomes.
Communication Skills Teachers also need to experience a high level of communication skills. Unlike the normal face-to-face process of learning, engaging learners through technological tools requires the teacher to experience a high ability to connect with learners in the way that can make them stay focused on the process of learning. Some of these ways include but are not limited to selecting a suitable venue for relaying the information to learners. Besides, it is also essential to organize the information for the learners in a consistent and coherent manner. Also, teachers should dress in a way that cannot interfere with the learner's attention during the process of learning. New and efficient ways of teaching
Another critical thing that teachers should consider is the ability to employ new and efficient ways of teaching. Different from the face-to-face teaching process, engaging learners through the online platform requires that the teacher should employ ways that will keep them attentive to the screen for a more extended period. These mechanisms include but is not limited to humor, giving learners room to ask questions besides breaking the learning process into reasonable periods that cannot tire the learners. Cultivating learners in teaching to stay attentive when using online technology enhances the proper understanding of the content. In essence, teachers' desire to continue engaging learners away from school in the current time of global pandemic times requires the need for adopting skills that will make them properly dispense the content in a more meaningful way. Being conversant with the current technologies that support learning will open room for proper interlink process between the learners and teachers. Still, teachers need to possess the ability to communicate in a way that cultivates learners to stay attentive in learning. Using these techniques enhances a proper learning process that can yield positive impacts on the learners.
