生ABOUT EMERGENCE EMERGENCE is an initiative by Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) to provide an avenue for aspiring choreographers to be 生mentored by industry professionals and present their works in a ticketed dance production. Over the past 7 iterations of Emergence, SCDT has witnessed 49 unique and diverse new works and has provided many budding dance artists with the opportunity to present their works to an audience. The theme for this year’s EMERGENCE is “Genesis of Life”. “Genesis 生之 生of Life” seeks to explore dance creation through a “profound” way in order to express the indescribable life experiences. It hopes to spark individuals to search deeper within themselves while living 之in the continuous evolution of human society and culture. Apart from crafting their piece in accordance with the given theme, the new works are required to be of a Chinese dance style. For some of these young choreographers who are new to Chinese dance, this further challenges them as emerging creators. To better equip them with the skills and vocabulary to create their 之源 之works, participants underwent Dance Composition and Chinese Dance “Shen Yun” workshops, led by SCDT’s Creative Director, Mr Benedict Soh and Founder and Artistic Advisor Mdm Lim Moi Kim, respectively. 源Mr Benedict Soh has also taken on the role of EMERGENCE’s mentor for a second time, and he is glad to be able to guide the young choreographers to experience the meaning and values of 源之生生 源Chinese culture through choreography once again.
生MESSAGE FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The inspiration for creation can come from life, your experiences, 生and your memories. It could also be from a novel you have read or an interesting movie you have watched. China’s traditional culture is broad and profound, with a long historical background. With its centuries of continuous development, Chinese Culture has developed and formed a variety of unique characteristics and symbols in many aspects. 生之 生In performing arts, dance and opera originally belonged to two different artistic performance forms, but at some point, they have 之started to integrate and develop alongside each other. Chinese dance choreography refers to the character expression methods and performance styles of opera art, constantly enhancing national characteristics and continuously improving the aesthetic level of the masses. At “Emergence 2022”, I shared the ideas and techniques of 之源 之Chinese dance choreography with the new choreographers, and I hope that with this sharing, they will have a better understanding of Chinese dance’s creation and apply it to their new works along with this year’s theme, “Genesis of Life”. 源I am deeply heartened to have them with us this year and to witness their dedication towards their craft. 生MESSAGE FROM CREATIVE DIRECTOR & MENTOR Dance enables us to find our unique roles amidst the rapidly 生changing and expanding horizons of dance culture. Likewise, \"Emergence 2022\" explores dance choreography with an approach that invites a rethinking and reframing of relations between space and time, particularly that of language, presence, aesthetics and authorship. It contextualises the deep and subtle connections that the choreographed body fosters, in its multiplicity of forms and meanings, with regard to social, ethical and political viewpoints. 生之 生The aim of \"Emergence 2022\" is not to achieve a mastery of any particular dance technique or style but rather to rediscover every 之individual's unique style of expressions and body movement essence, to share concepts of identity through narrative and performative means. 生CHARMAINE TAN YU LING Charmaine started her Chinese Dance training under the tutelage of Mdm Gan Beng Lee at the age of 7. In 2013, she completed the 生Chinese Dance Graded Examination from the Beijing Dance Academy dance examination board. She loves to perform and has been actively participating in Chinese dance performances with Wu Yue Dance Studio Arts Troupe. She has also participated in various dance events such as Chingay, Dancing in Unity, My Clan My Music, Chinese Dance Fiesta, as well as Dance Image. 生之 生After her first opportunity to create a Chinese dance piece, she developed an interest in choreographing Chinese dance works. Along with a keen eye for details, she has been creating Chinese 之dance works since 2015. 生WONG WEN RU Wong Wen Ru is a passionate dancer from Malaysia who started her dance journey at the age of 13. She graduated from Nanyang 生Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a Diploma in Dance and was a recipient of NAFA’s Dean’s List Award (2019 & 2021). Wen Ru has performed in several NAFA productions, such as “The Third Space” and “Crossing”, where she worked with choreographers such as Christina Chan (Singapore), Hwa Wei An (Malaysia), Lim Moi Kim (Singapore), Rosa Park (Republic of Korea), 生之 生Son Yu Joung (Republic of Korea), Tan Xin Yen (Malaysia), and Zhuo Zihao (Singapore). 之Wen Ru joined Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) in 2021 and is currently a Junior Artiste with the company. Her recent involvement in the company’s work includes “If It’s Now” as part of Huayi - Chinese Festival of Arts, co-produced by SCDT and Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, and SCDT’s core production 之源之生源生源之源“SOAR:ADevotion”.

生X E N R E SC HK II RJIIS- HHOI MNAG J O N A HXenres started his dance journey in 2016 at the age of 19, auditioned and 生entered the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in July 2016. Xenres competed in the first Contemporary Dance competition organized by The Flux Collective as the top prize winner, “Judge’s Choice,” with his choreography in September 2018. Xenres was invited as a guest artist to perform for the International Ballet Grand Prix Singapore (IBGPS) 2019 with an original work. Xenres managed his production with his working partner on an independent artist project titled “Project Up Side Right’ in January 2020, which was partially funded by the National Arts Council. Presently, Xenres is a 生之 生Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200), Resident Instructor for SOKA GAKKAI SINGAPORE – Sunflower Dance Ensemble, Resident Instructor for The Moving Artistry Studio, Chairperson for NAFA’s Dance Alumni Chapter, President of World Dance Alliance Singapore and the Director for Kirishima Dance Corps 霧嶋舞踊隊 之. Xenres was also featured in the national press, such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao, for his exceptional flair in his craft. Alongside an independent group of professional dancers in Kirishima Dance Corps, he takes on freelancing works and reaches out to the dance community nationally and internationally. Xenres was commissioned to choreograph for several events, such as the M1 Contact Contemporary Dance Festival 2020/2021, Scape/CANVAS 2021, SCAPE’s MOV: MENT Lab 2022, and will be representing the World Dance Alliance Singapore at the Khajuraho Festival in 之源 之India2023. Xenres focuses on devising an inter- culture style of contemporary dance 源that is heavily rooted in the philosophies of Taiji, Yoga, Chinese Dance, Aikido, and Capoeira, and is developing his esoteric movement technique titled “Water Breath Technique”. Kirishima Dance Corps‘ vision is to integrate eastern and western art cultures, and its mission is 源生 源to utilize art to educate and spread 之生awareness on mental health disorders.

生L I M L E N Z OLenzo was born in Penang, Malaysia, and started dancing since the age of 14. He began his dance journey at the Chinese Cultural Dance in Phor 生Tay Ex-pupils Association for 3 years before venturing into modern dance. He choreographed his first dance piece with members of Phor Tay Private High School dance Co-curricular Activity (CCA). At the age of 18, he started learning contemporary dance technique formally from Aida Redza. He also picked up ballet in myDance Station Ballet Academy when he was 21. Lenzo has also been exposed various cultural dance forms such as Indian dance, Malay dance and more. 生之 生In April 2019, Lenzo graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with a Diploma in Dance. Within the 3 years of study in NAFA, he danced in pieces choreographed by Dr Filomar C. Tariao, Christina 之Chan, Charlotte Boye- Christensen, Richard Chappell, Ezekiel Oliveira and Dr Siri Rama. He also choreographed works for his Dance Creation modules, of which include \"Dear World\", \"The Face\", and \"Allelopathy\" under the mentorship of Ms Gillian Tan. In mid-2019, Lenzo participated in the Overseas Immersion Programme conducted by NAFA, where he went to the Northern School of Contemporary (UK) and created a duet piece with fellow classmate Tan Xin Yen titled \"I like the difference 之源 之between us\" based on the experience and reflexion of the 3 weeks trip. 源Collective in December 2021. 生H a p p y H u n t i n g !Choreography by Jozef Chua 生\"Happy Hunting!\" is a work about the Chinese mythological fox spirit, taking inspiration from Ken Liu’s short story \"Good Hunting\". This choreography draws from the playful sensuality of the young fox spirit, as it enters into a physical maturity. There is an intensity in the fox spirit’s tease, a provocation extended to the audience 生之within the implicit suggestions of a young body. This provocation 生is concealed within the innocence of the hunt and the essence of play. The choreography of the analogical hunt(s) remains open to interpretation, especially in its commentary of Chinese culture in 之our postcolonial present day. 生JOZEF CHUA Jozef Chua is a performance-maker who is interested in interdisciplinary creation. He actively seeks out new technologies 生and dance forms to broaden his craft, with the aim of creating striking audience experiences. Jozef is enamoured by the natural phenomena that occur in our physical and social worlds and is eager to push gendered performances in various movement forms, representing its possibilities as our societies evolve. 生之 生His creative processes intimately involve costuming, set design, props and soundscapes. At present, she is a member of the Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre Youth Performance Troupe. Chloe is passionate, creative, and determined. With a solid resilience to improve her dance skills, she aspires to become a 生之 生professional dancer and has recently found an interest in dance choreography. To him, dance is a way to embrace chaos, be antifragile, and grow stronger with randomness. It is about finding beauty in the mundane. 生WINNIE CHOO Winnie discovered her calling in dance ever since she started doing Chinese dance in primary school, which led her to pursue 生Ballet later on at the age of 11. She has since finished her Royal Academy of Dance graded syllabus grades 1 to 8, as well as Intermediate in ballet. She is also pursuing a Diploma in Dance at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). At NAFA, she has been introduced to many other dance genres, such as contemporary, jazz, salsa, and various Asian cultural dance forms, which has exposed her to many learning and performance opportunities. She 生之 生has since been actively performing for her course mates’ dance pieces and has been involved in several dance productions by local choreographers. She has performed in pieces such as ‘Rasa Jiwa’ 之by Norisham Osman, ‘Homebody’ by Yarra Ileto, ‘Nowhere’ by Shahrin Johry, ‘Round Trip’ by Norhaizad Adam, and more. Besides being a performer, she also took up emcee and stage crew roles in a few productions and choreographed a few dance pieces for her 之源之生源生源源之school’sproductions.

生GABRIELLA GLEICHENIA GAUTAMA Gabriella Gleichenia Gautama is a dancer from Singapore. She studied ballet under Ms Boo Lin Pin and Chinese dance under 生Mdm Zou Yi. A Diploma in Dance graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), she was a recipient of NAFA's Dean List Award (2019, 2021), Tan Chay Bing Scholarship (2019) and the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation Merit Award (2020). Gabriella has performed in NAFA's major productions, where she worked with numerous international and local choreographers. 生之 生Gabriella joined Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) in 2021 and is currently a Junior Artiste with the company.
