The project scope also included the demolishing of the existing Jukskei River Bridge and construction of two new bridges crossing the Jukskei River. A new interchange in the vicinity of Erling Street intersection to provide access to the Telesure and Steyn City Developments in the west and Century City developments towards the east of road K46 was constructed. The road will connect Bryanston, Sandton, Hyde Park, Rosebank and Johannesburg via Jan Smuts Avenue. It will also improve access to the Diepsloot area and Fourways towards Randburg. During construction, black economic enterprise contractors were provided with substantial portion of the work whilst local and other labourers were trained on how to execute the work with a high degree for safety. A total of 178 workers were employed on The upgraded William Nicol Drive, which has been improved to site, of which 109 were from the local communities who received the tune of R422 million, was officially opened by the Gauteng training in courses such as first aid, firefighting, anti-waste Premier David Makhura and MEC for Roads and Transport management and traffic incident investigations. The upgrading of the road is expected to improve pedestrian traffic safety and result in increased motorised road user capacity. Also, busses and taxi parking bays are located at key intersections along the road. Phase 2 of the upgrade of William Nicol Drive - linking it to the N14 freeway - will be launched in this financial year.“This is a high traffic volume road that needed to be upgraded to facilitate ease of mobility in an area that is the focal point of extensive human settlement developments. What is equally important is that the newly constructed road reflects a government policy shift towards ‘complete streets’, which allows for cycling and pedestrian walkways. This reflects the provincial government’s commitment to promote safe, non-motorised transport on a popular route for cyclists,” said MEC Vadi.
