What is EN12642 XL? SDC’s EN XL rated vehicles display stickers in prominentEN 12642 XL is a whole-body, European load containment standard positions to indicate that thewhich details the safety and technical parameters required to secure a trailer has been independentlyload for transport. Vehicles that are accredited to EN 12642 XL require assessed to meet the structuralless, or no additional load restraint measures. This simplifies the loading build and safety requirements.and unloading process, saving time and providing an economic benefit forthe operator. To achieve EN 12642 XL, a reinforced vehicle body (either trailer or rigidbodywork over 3,500kgs GVW) is tested by an accredited body suchas the German TUV or the UK VCA, using static or dynamic tests. Bothtests have the same primary function: to test the front wall, rear wall andside walls of the vehicle to given values as laid out in EN 12642.When the trailer passes stringent tests, a certificate will be issuedtogether with the right to apply a compliance mark to the bodywork, indicating that the vehicle complies with the EN XL standard. The quality standard is met through testing of the vehicle bodywork asa whole, therefore reinforced curtains fitted to the trailer does not meanthe whole vehicle will meet the EN XL regulation. There is no current plan for EN 12642 XL to become legislation inthe UK, however, more hauliers such as those in chemical and paperindustries, specify that trailers carrying their goods must meet the EN XLstandard.SDC EN 12642 XL vehicles SDC offer a wide range of EN 12642 XL accredited trailers to meet your specific logistics trailers and load restraint systems have provided excellent feedback, such as higher levels continuously reviewing and adding to our range of EN XL vehicles based on customer req Platform Headboard Double-deck Curtainsider Straightframe Curtainsider with fixed roof2
Dynamic testingThe dynamic test comprises four individual sections:1) Brake Deceleration In Longitudinal Direction (front wall test)2) Transverse Acceleration (side wall test)3) Transverse Acceleration on Both Curves (side wall test)4) Reverse Acceleration (Rear wall test)To pass the dynamic testing process each trailer has to be fully ladenwith a load that becomes unstable at 0.2g, to ensure the load is movinginto the bodywork during the tests.Static testingThe static test comprises of three individual sections, namely front, side and rear wall tests. The test forces aregenerated using large air bags to apply and evenly distribute the load to the wall being tested.s requirements. SDC Load Restraint SystemsSDC offer a wide range of load securing methods including over-the-top lashings, rear kites, intermediate bulk heads and direct lashing to specific anchor points, toensure you are compliant when goods are not loaded with a positive fit. What is Load Restraint? Load Netting system Track and Strap systemLoad restraint is to ensure that all loads are retained, and that the load Cage Restraint systemalways maintains contact with the bed of the vehicle.Effective load restraint not only prevents goods from falling onto roads andcausing danger to other road users, but it also saves money by ensuring thatgoods arrive at their destination undamaged.EN XL vehicles involved in multi drop operations may start their journeymeeting positive fit requirements, however, as the load diminishes thedriver will be required to use additional load securing such as SDC’s raveto rave strap system in order to comply with the DSVA load restraintEnforcement Matrix.Positive fit loading:• Load from the headboard, filling the length of the load bed up to the bulkhead, which must be in good condition.• The load must be tight to the front bulkhead, within 75mm of the sides, and within 150mm of the rear.• The load must be secured to the rear if it is not retained by the trailer body or rear doors.
